Any sites that have still not implemented this >capability should strongly consider doing so. If APO's modem pool is to become a reliable backup mechanism for observers, it needs some work. Presently it only supports uncompressed SLIP, which is a waste of bandwidth and also hard on Mac users (there is not good free SLIP software). Support of PPP would be a huge help and is probably very easy to implement on the APO terminal servers (our local phys/astro computing center has done it and can offer advice if necessary). Also, for reliable connections it is worth making sure APO has internet-service-provider quality modems. (USR Courier V.Everything modems, for instance, are very high quality and only cost $300.) Observing time is too precious to play around with anything less. -- Russell APO APO APO APO APO Apache Point Observatory 3.5m APO APO APO APO APO This is message 94 in the apo35-general archive.
