In response to Russell Owen's comments about modem connections at APO let me add the following. We are currently running US Robotics Sportster modems on both lines. These support most of the protocols that I know of. We have had connections from Dos 3.0 machines up to Windows 95 and MacOS 7.5.3. We are indeed running only uncompressed SLIP at this time at the request of one of our users who is having problems with his link. When these are resolved we will go back to compressed SLIP. I have noticed very little difference between uncompressed and compressed slip at the higher modem speed. To date I have not had a problem with the SLIP drivers that we use here. It is from VersaTerm and costs only $50. Getting PPP working is definitely on my list of things to do but it was not a high priority. The driver that I was testing (FreePPP) was not very nice about other SLIP/PPP drivers being installed and these made it difficult to switch back and forth. Now that the home institutions are using the link I have stronger reasons for getting PPP working and will move it up the priority list. -- Think! It's good practice for when the computer is down.
