Hello all,
As you know, the LSST SWG will be meeting in Tucson next Tuesday and
Wednesday. As we discussed in the phonecon a few weeks ago (minutes
available at:
http://astro.princeton.edu/~dss/LSST/lsst-general/msg.76.html)
the emphasis on this meeting will be on work, rather than
presentations. In particular, it will be an opportunity for us to get
away from talking in generalities, and starting getting specific about
what each science driver topic needs from LSST, and what science is
enabled under a generic observing strategy. I had hoped that the time
between our phonecon and the Tucson meeting would be filled with
activity and traffic on this mailing list. With the very notable
exception of the hard work that Dave Monet has been doing on
astrometry (thanks, Dave!), and the work that Al Harris posted on
tsunami risks, I am not aware that much has happened on the SWG
front. The idea was that we would come to the meeting with the work
of the previous few weeks in our hands, ready to really push on the
details. I very much hope there has been a lot of work going on that
people have simply not yet mentioned.

We will have a limited amount of time during the meeting for
presentations; I know in particular that Zeljko Ivezic and Ted Bowell
both plan to present their thoughts on possible cadences, which will
be a good point of discussion. I think we will also be eager to hear
a report from the folks who attended the Houston tsunami meeting to
get the latest. Please let me know sooner rather than later if
additional people would like to make presentations.

So the plan for the meeting is to start 9 AM Tuesday morning
(Sidney, will you let us know which room we will be in at NOAO) to
have some brief introductory remarks and clarifications of assignments
and groups. We will then go off and do work, trying, in the context
of each of the science goals, to address the myriad questions of
science requirements and what a baseline LSST observing program can do
for us. Sidney, will it be possible to have available several small
offices where we can work in small groups? We will meet back in
mid-afternoon, to compare notes and find out what we have been up to.
Wednesday will be similar; I know some people have to leave early to
catch planes, so we'll make sure to get all together mid-day Wednesday
to summarize where we stand.

A few practicalities. I believe (and Sidney and Jane should
confirm) that we will all go out to dinner together Tuesday night.
The last time I was in Tucson for an LSST function, we ate at a really
delicious place!
About 8 of us are staying at the Residence Inn, which is a bit of a
drive from NOAO. I will rent a car, and so can drive 3-4 people
back and forth; we need one other person to volunteer to rent a car to
get us there and back. Please let me know if you intend to rent a
car.

Finally, below is my current list of people planning to attend the
meeting; please let me know of any corrections.

		       Many thanks,
		       Michael Strauss
