Applications are invited for a postdoctoral-level position at the
University
of Washington starting as soon as possible, and no later than Sep 1, 2006,
for the duration of at least three years (the position is open-ended in case
of satisfactory performance). The main responsibility of this position is to
support the LSST (Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, lsst.org) System
Scientist
in the development of LSST science case. The successful candidate will
conduct
studies to justify the scientific value of the LSST, perform the necessary
analysis or simulations to support the LSST design, and work on the
identification
and development of new scientific opportunities for the LSST. While this
work
will be done in close collaboration with the System Scientist and other LSST
team members, a high level of independence and creativity will be expected.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, or a closely related
field.
Experience in any of the four main LSST science drivers, Dark Energy and
Dark
Matter, the Milky Way, the Solar System, and Transient Universe, is
preferred,
but not required. Please send a 2-page statement of professional

and
the names of three people who will send a letter of reference directly
to the
Department. Priority will be given to complete applications (with letters)
