Colleagues,
I'd like to announce that Michael Strauss has completed 3 years as Chair of
the LSST Science Working Group and will be stepping down this month. On
behalf of NOAO and the future user community of the LSST survey, I'd like to
thank Michael for doing an outstanding job as chair. Towards a Design
Reference Mission (DRM) is a publication that has broadened our concept of what
LSST can achieve into a robust cosmology, galactic structure, and solar system
exploration mission. It is the work of the whole SWG, but the unacknowledged
first author is Michael. He's truly done a first author's work to produce this.

What comes next ? The next stage of the DRM process is to ask whether all
the scientific goals listed in our publication can be met by an LSST. I've been
talking to Abi Saha about running realizations of the DRM through the LSST
simulator. This would allow the SWG to consider options for an actual DRM,
and this would provide significant user community guidance the SWG can offer
to both the LSST project and Pan-STARRS. I'd imagine having a SWG meeting
early next year in which we debate the merits of three or four alternate DRMs.

Anyway, that's a matter for the next SWG Chair. Don't rush me with offers to
take over the chair ! I'd prefer to wait until after the Dark Energy 
Taskforce has
reported and people's time is a little freer. In the meantime, Michael tells me
he's able to remain a member of the SWG and that the email exploder will
remain working at Princeton.
