Hello all,
You can pick up the whole thing in
ftp://ftp.astro.princeton.edu/strauss/LSST/DRM.(ps,pdf)
You can also find the source (LaTeX files and postscript figures) in
ftp://ftp.astro.princeton.edu/strauss/LSST/DRM/source
I consider this essentially done. Lots of small changes from all of
your many comments. The following are the substantive changes
since the version I posted two weeks ago:
Abstract: Note the modified last few sentences.
Intro: End of intro has been rewritten, and now has a forward
reference to Chapter 12 ("What lies ahead") where the comparison of
surveys is now discussed.
Gravitational Lensing (Section 7): Tony is planning to get me
cleaner versions of Figures 11 and 12 (actually, as I write this, the
new version of Fig 11 arrived; thanks, Tony!). You will notice a number of
wording changes through 7.4 and 7.5; Tony and Gary, in particular,
should see whether my interpretation of their discussion is correct.
Supernovae (Section 8): Chris Smith promises a new draft of the
first paragraph of Section 8.1.1. I added further caveats there about
possible systematics. There is some modified text at the end of
8.1.2.
Gary pointed out some inconsistencies between the text and figures
at the end of 8.3 on parameter estimation; I think I straightened that
out now.
The Appendix on data distribution has now been moved up as Chapter
11, as we discussed yesterday.
Chapter 12 ("What lies ahead") has been expanded in a number of
places, as we discussed. Based on comments from John Tonry, I've
strengthened the statements (under 'observatory location') about the
need for good seeing. I've added a discussion of the desirability to
have common filter systems between different telescopes. And there is
a new subsection about comparison between facilities (the first draft
of which you saw as the end to the introduction, which I sent around
last night). The text now simply states that the definition of
figures of merit is an involved one, and we'll tackle this down the
road; the table now simply has various characteristics of the
different programs. Three newly added ones are exposure times,
etendue (yes, I suppose this is a FOM, but one used throughout the
text), and program duration. As before, please, everyone check for
correctness!
8.4m LSST (Appendix B) adds a 'note in proof' describing the
increase in field of view from 3 to 3.5 degrees, together with a
figure showing the image quality as a function of radius.
And that's about it! I plan to send a formal note to Jeremy Mould
and Sidney Wolff first thing Monday morning saying we're all done;
please send any (hopefully minor) corrections before then!
Thanks, Michael
