Three short additions to Jeremy's reply to Dave's e-mail. 1) We (LSST at
NOAO), in cooperation with WIYN are sharing detector development
information and costs with PanSTARRs for OTCCDs. The detectors we see
right now as the riskiest/least solved technical issue for both projects.
2) If we don't pursue the monolithic design to a level further than its
current cartoon level, we cannot confront the trades between the
two designs. After all, PanSTARRs is funded to proceed to construction
and the 8-m version is little more than a concept. The design whose
problems are not known always looks more attractive. If the
multi-telescope approach proves best, NOAO will have the
intellectual integrity to recognize that. We have
also specifically asked Michael to look at whether having telescopes
in multiple locations is an advantage for the science. The LSST mono-
lithic design development and evaluation would proceed faster if it had
funding and staff, which we are working on. Right now we are limited
by resources and nothing else. And 3)
the time scale for the SWG does matter--I can't tell you how many
times a week we say we need to know the science requirements to
to proceed with a baseline design and then simply make our best
guess.
