To all APO 3.5-m users:
CorMASS, a low-resolution near-IR echelle spectrometer, is a
returning visiting instrument that will be available for general
scheduled use during 2005 Quarter 4, and possibly into 2006. The
CorMASS instrument team recently updated the CorMASS web-site, which
includes a pointer to retrieve new data-reduction software; for more
information, see:
http://www.astro.virginia.edu/research/instrumentation/cormass.html
John Wilson, from the University of Virginia, plans to re-commission
CorMASS at the telescope during October bright time. The instrument
may be requested for use in modified service-observing mode during
the remainder of the quarter (the Observing Specialists will operate
the instrument, but you must be present or remotely connected during
the observations). Submit proposals through your normal
institutional channel for time allocation, specifying CorMASS as the
instrument, and service as the observing mode.
During re-commissioning, a limited amount of time will be available
for ARC-requested observations. If you have science targets that you
would like observed during the this time, send the following
information for each target to John Wilson (jcw6z at virginia.edu)
[DO NOT REPLY TO THIS E-MAIL DIRECTLY]:
Target name:
Target coordinates, epoch:
Exposure time:
or
S/N desired:
Other observing requirements:
If time allows, observations will be obtained and the data will be
sent to you.
From the standpoint of demonstrating the performance and utility of
the instrument, test data taken in 2004 are available. John Wilson
is willing to reduce some of last year's data with the new tool as a
means of demonstrating the software; this could be done before the
October re-commissioning. Please contact John for more information.
Best regards,
Bruce Gillespie, for Suzanne Hawley, John Wilson, and Mike Skrutskie
