PRELIMINARY ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 2ND QUARTER 2004
E. TURNER/R. MCMILLAN 3/11/04
NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***
Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise (a
minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled in
half night blocks. NOTE, however, that there an unusually large
number of partial half night programs this quarter. Due to the short
nights at this time of year, these programs will have an unusually
large impact on the regular programs with which they share a given
half night. The regular (half night) programs so affected will be
given priority in requests for OPEN time (see below).
Scheduled engineering time for this quarter consists of 13 half nights
and 4 partial half nights, including 6 half nights of summer shutdown
at the end of June. This constitutes 8.2% of the total observing time
for the quarter or 5.1% excluding the shutdown time.
In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations
may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows
"hot pursuit" of some significant problem.
Please see links off of the APO home page
(http://www.apo.nmsu.edu/) for a web based interactive version of
this schedule.
There are 13 OPEN half nights in this version of the schedule: one April
2nd half, one May second half, nine June second halves and two June first
halves. Rather than assign some of them to "10% contingency" requests
as usually done, these 13 half nights are available by request to
elt@astro.princeton.edu Please send any such request asap. Priority
will be given to half night programs which lost time to partial night
programs and to institutions which did not receive their full allotment
of time due to scheduling difficulties. Priority will also be given to
TAC approved programs rather than entirely new ones. Please point out
any such reasons for your request to receive priority in your email.
No unassigned DD time is available in this schedule.
-----
EN Note: No science observations scheduled during EN time.
-----
EN01 = EN01 Gill ? O
Routine periodic engineering time
One and a fraction half nights planned lost to UW01 and CU03,
respectively.
EN02 = EN02 Skru CM O
CorMass commisioning & routine engineering
EN03 = EN03 Klae N/A O
Engineering & maintenance shutdown
-----
DD Note: Director's Discretionary Time (4.4% of total time)
-----
DD01 = 042DD01 Wood F O
Only 4 of the requested 6 half nights available this quarter.
DD02 = 042DD02 Skru CM O
Engineering & science observations with CorMass
-----
CU Note: 82% of nominal share scheduled.
-----
CU01 = CU01 Elli D R (rm+bl)
CU02 = CU02 Hear GS R
Dark & grey time scheduled; will also use some DD02 CM time
working with DD02 PI. One bright half night not scheduled.
CU03 = CU03 Stri SDG R (rh+bh)
Seven of 10 requested partial nights scheduled; strong conflict
with most heavily oversubscribed portion of the quarter.
CU04 = CU04 Dros E R
PI is not on the certified remote observer list, although not so
listed in the scheduling request. This needs to be straightened
out before the observations take place.
-----
JH note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.
-----
JH01 = 1 Glaz E O
TOO, not scheduled
JH02 = 2 Oliv E R
JH03 = 3 Gole D R (rm+bl)
JH04 = 4 Hebb G R
JH05 = 5 Venn E O
JH06 = 6 Venn D O
-----
NM note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.
-----
NM01 = NM01 Chan G R
Partial nights scheduled during 5/3-7, inclusive, are contingent on
the TBD feasibility of normal instrument changes with the visiting
CorMass instrument (EN02 & DD02). The NM01 PI will need to maintain
close contact with the CorMass PI and APO staff in this regard.
NM02 = NM02 Chan E O
April 26 scheduled instead of May 6.
NM03 = NM03 Osbo D R (rh)
An uncommonly convoluted statement of scheduling requirements but
believed to be scheduled as requested (if the request was correctly
understood).
NM04 = NM04 Harr D R (rh+bl)
NM05 = NM05 Chur D O (rh+bh)
The very long and detailed explanation of the basis for the
scheduling constraints merely makes it harder/slower to locate
the statement of what is actually needed. A brief statement of
the constraints and their general basis would be more helpful.
NM06 = NM06 Klyp D R (rh+bm)
Note non-standard DIS grating config. It was not possible to
entirely avoid nights with other scheduled DIS usage. The NM06
PI will need to coordinate plans for grating changes with the
on-duty OS and PIs of other programs using DIS on some nights.
NM07 = NM07 Ande D R? (rh+bh)
NM08 = NM08 McGe D O (rm+bl)
NM09 = NM09 Holt E R?
NM10 = NM10 Sned D O (rh+bh)
-----
PU note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.
-----
PU01 = PU01 Henn D R (rh+bh)
PU02 = PU02 Bowe F R?
PU03 = PU03 Turn D R (rm+bl)
PU04 = PU04 Stra SGD (rl+bl??)
Not all full nights possible.
PU05 = PU05 John D R (rm+bl)
The 2" slit is not always mounted in the slit wheel; please be
sure to call attention to your need for the 2" slit in your
set-up email, due at least 24 hrs in advance of observing.
PU06 = PU06 Rich D R (rm+bl)
The 2" slit is not always mounted in the slit wheel; please be
sure to call attention to your need for the 2" slit in your
set-up email, due at least 24 hrs in advance of observing.
PU07 = PU07 Rich D R (rm+bl)
The 2" slit is not always mounted in the slit wheel; please be
sure to call attention to your need for the 2" slit in your
set-up email, due at least 24 hrs in advance of observing.
PU08 = PU08 Turn S O
-----
UC note: 92% of nominal share scheduled.
-----
UC01 = 460 Kron D R (rh+bh)
UC02 = 463 Lamb SDEG R (rm+bm)
UC03 = 459 Tuml D R (rm+bl)
UC04 = 458 Kent D R (rm+bl)
UC05 = 462 York EDGS R (??)
Bright, grey, dark allocation not consistent with all Fridays.
Nine of 12 half nights assigned. All Fridays would require
6B/2G/5D; 8B/0G/4D allocated. One B and two D half nights not
scheduled.
UC06 = 461 York F R?
UC07 = 457 York D R (rh+bh)
UC08 = 455 York EGDS R (any)
First Friday in May not available.

only 6 filters at a time.
UW03 = UW03 Yoac D R (rh+bh)
Note that there are no dark second halves in early April; check
lunar calendar before defining constraints please. The requested
slit is often not mounted in the filter wheel, so please be sure
to call attention to the slit requirement in your setup email, due
24 hours before observations begin.
UW04 = UW04 Silv D R (rh+bh)
UW05.S = UW05 Cova S R
UW05.D = UW05 Cova D R (rm+bl)
UW06 = UW06 Szko D R (rh+bh)

MOST PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED IN HALF NIGHT BLOCKS. THE FIRST HALF
OF EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM -12 DEGREE EVENING TWILIGHT UNTIL 0000
MST OR 0100 MDT. THE SECOND HALF FOLLOWS UNTIL -12 DEGREE MORNING
TWILIGHT.
FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND, AS "B".
THIS QUARTER FIVE PROGRAMS USE NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING.
THESE PROGRAMS ARE INDICATED IN PARENTHESES () ON THE SCHEDULE
AND THEIR TIME ALLOTMENTS ARE LISTED HERE:
CU03 = 60 MIN FOLLOWING EVENING -12 DEGREE TWILIGHT EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
NM01 = FROM SUNSET UNTIL 70 MIN FOLLOWING -12 DEGREE TWILIGHT EACH
TIME SCHEDULED.
NM02 = 72 MIN FOLLOWING EVENING -12 DEGREE TWILIGHT EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
PU06 = 120 MIN FOLLOWING EVENING -12 DEGREE TWILIGHT EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
UC08 = 60 MIN BEFORE EVENING -12 DEGREE TWILIGHT EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
IN ADDITION PU03 USES NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING ON TWO OF THE NIGHTS ON WHICH
IT HAS TIME AND A FULL HALF NIGHT ON ANOTHER NIGHT AS INDICATED IN THE
SCHEDULE BELOW.
INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE
INDICATED IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO AND WILL BE SHARED
BETWEEN ADJOINING PROGRAMS AS USUAL.
