		PRELIMINARY ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 1ST QUARTER 1998
			     E. TURNER 12/13/97

			NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***

	Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise
	(a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled
	in half night blocks.

	Note that an unusually large number (6) of programs use non-block
	scheduling this quarter. Time requests for this quarter also included
	several new monitoring programs. See below for details. This affects of
	course the schedules of other programs with which they share nights.

	Scheduled engineering time for this quarter amounts to 6 nights.
	No contingent engineering time has been scheduled this quarter.
	Thus, scheduled engineering time will be at approximately the 7%
	level. Note, however, that one or more extended engineering
	shutdowns may be carried out in order to pursue tasks related to
	the Three Year Plan upgrade efforts. Such shutdowns will result
	in cancelation of scheduled science programs. Please see message
	#160 under apo35-general in the email exploder archives maintained
	on the Princeton web site for further information.

	In addition to such engineering time, science observations
	may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
	engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
	to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows
	"hot pursuit" of one of the high priority "teething troubles".

				IMPORTANT - OPEN TIME!:
	Nineteen half nights of OPEN time, scattered throughout the quarter
	but starting as early as 5 Jan. are available; this breaks down as
	17B/1G/1D. Requests for this time should reach me ASAP but no
	later than Dec. 31. Requests for this time *must* be passed through
	your institutional scheduler.

	-------

	EN01 = engineering time (Gillespie)
		no science observations scheduled

	-----
	JHU Note: 107% of nominal share scheduled.
	-----
	JH01 = 1Q98JH01 Wyse G R
	JH02 = 1Q98JH02 Knez D S
	JH03 = 1Q98JH03 Ford D R
		First half nights in Feb. were best approximation of requested
		time available at this priority. Please declare OPEN asap if
		they cannot be used. Note that April is not part of 1Q.

	-----
	NMSU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.

	NM01 = NM01 Madd AMBER S
	NM02 = NM02 Harr D S
	NM03 = NM03 Thil D S
	NM04 = NM04 Hame S S
	NM05 = NM05 Geha S S
	NM06 = NM06 Duri S S
		Full nights of grey time are, of course, never available.
	NM07 = NM07 Hoop D S
	NM08 = NM08 Deve G S
	NM09 = NM09 Deve G S
	NM10 = NM10 John D R
	NM11 = NM11 McNa (1/22=S, 1/25=D) S
	NM12 = NM12 Will G S

	-----
	PU Note: 69% of nominal share scheduled. Undersubscribed B time.

	PU01 = 981PU01 Turn D S
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below.
	PU02 = 981PU02 Fan D R
	PU03 = 981PU03 Turn S S

	-----
	UC Note: 105% of nominal share scheduled.
	-----
	UC01 = 245 York S R
	UC02 = 241 Newb D S
	UC03 = 248 Lamb G R
	UC04 = 239 Here G R
	UC05 = 246 Kron D R
	UC06 = 243 Kron D/S R
	UC07 = 247 Coor G R
		Observer not yet certified for remote operations.
	UC08 = 238 Turn S R
	UC09 = 250 Harp G R
	UC10 = 242 York D R
	UC11 = 240 York D R
		Stated observing constraints could not be satisfied at this
		priority, but a perhaps workable alternative has been
		scheduled. Please declare OPEN asap if scheduled time is
		not usable.
	UC12 = 244 York D/G R*
		Adler Planetarium twilight program (not accounted to UC).
		Use instrument mounted for the night's first program.
                Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
                schedule below. Only 5 of 13 requested dates scheduled
		due to conflicts with science programs explicitly requesting
		twilight for calibrations (which is increasingly common
		practise). It might be worth contacting PIs of some of these
		programs to make sure they really plan to use all of the
		twilight.

	-----
	UW Note: 104% of nominal share scheduled. UW request over by two
	half nights. Please provide a summary/tally of requests broken down
	among B, G and R along with individual program info in future quarters,
	as per allotment instructions.
	-----
	UW01 = UW01 Dier S R
		Eight specific dates mentioned but nine half nights assigned.
		Extra one scheduled in a "reasonable" way.
	UW02 = UW02 Beck S R
	UW03 = UW03 Rodg D R
                Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
               	schedule below.
	UW04 = UW04 Stub S/D R
                Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
                schedule below. Also, dynamic scheduling - time will often
		revert to adjoining UW programs on short notice. Please keep
		relevant site personnel as well as affected UW observers
		informed.
	UW05 = UW05 Reis D R
                Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
                schedule below. Also, dynamic scheduling - time will often
		revert to adjoining UW programs on short notice. Please keep
		relevant site personnel as well as affected UW observers
		informed. Also, rather confusing scheduling instructions.
		As far
		as I could tell it was not possible to co-schedule with UW04
		AND conform to requested parts of the night for both.
	UW06 = UW06 Wyde S R
	UW07 = UW07 Szko D R
	UW08 = UW08 Skel D/S R
	UW09 = UW09 Marg D R
	UW10 = UW10 Hoar G R
		If small amounts of time scheduled are not usable due to object
		position, see UW14.
	UW11 = UW11 Rodg G R
	UW12 = UW12 Bohm G S
		Requested time not available at this priority. Bright time
		in Jan.
		but well away from AAS scheduled. Please declare OPEN asap if
		it is not usable.
	UW13 = UW13 Toma S R
	UW14 = UW14 Rodg D S
		As requested, no time has been explicitly scheduled for this
		"drop-in" program. Rather small amounts (20-25 min) of time
		in twilight, or which are otherwise available during the night,
		will be devoted to this program. The PI and collaborators must
		work out the detailed policy and procedures by which this
		will be triggered with the site staff and me well in advance.

	WSU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.

	WS01 = WS01 Lutz D R
	WS02 = WSU2 Seck S R

	+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
	MOST PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED IN HALF NIGHT BLOCKS. THE FIRST HALF OF
	EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM EVENING TWILIGHT (SEE CALENDAR DISTRIBUTED
	BY GRETCHEN) UNTIL 0010 MST.

	FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND HALF THEN
	EXTENDS UNTIL MORNING TWILIGHT AND IS INDICATED BELOW AS "B".

	THIS QUARTER SIX DIFFERENT PROGRAMS USE NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING.
	THESE PROGRAMS ARE INDICATED IN PARENTHESES () ON THE SCHEDULE
	AND THEIR TIME ALLOTMENTS ARE LISTED HERE:
	PU01 = 40 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UW03 = 60 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UW04 = 30 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UW05 = 90 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UC12 = 90 MIN in TWILIGHT EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UW14 = NOT SCHEDULED, 20-25 MIN "DROP-IN"; SEE ABOVE.

	INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE INDICATED
	IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO BY GRETCHEN AND WILL BE SHARED
	BETWEEN ADJOINING PROGRAMS AS USUAL.

          *These observations are scheduled for twilight hours and
           are CONTINGENT upon the PI obtaining the EXPLICIT
           agreement 1) of Bruce Gillespie that site staff can
           accommodate the twilight usage and 2) of the nightime
           observers scheduled for that evening that there will be
           no serious adverse effect on their programs.
