All: The snow season is upon us (with possible El Nino enhancement to the accumulation this year). Getting to and from the site safely is your responsibility. To help, we offer a few recommendations for those planning travel to or from APO during snow season: o check with us for information on road conditions and/or forecasts of bad weather. Call us at 505-437-6822 or send email to staff@apo.nmsu.edu. On rare occasions, there may be nobody at the site--call me at home, 505-682-2704; o bring a warm coat with you and have it in your vehicle; o when renting cars to drive to the site, avoid getting a rear-drive vehicle or any vehicle with worn tires; o let us know your travel plans for both arrival and departure, try to schedule your travel during daylight hours; o where possible, caravan multiple vehicles during dicey conditions; o when snow is actually falling, it is advisable to stay put and avoid travelling altogether, if possible. Roads are generally cleared within the day (if not hours) after a snowfall; o we can loan cellular phones to those leaving the site, which can be dropped off once you get past the hairy part of the drive. bg APO APO APO APO APO Apache Point Observatory 3.5m APO APO APO APO APO This is message 208 in the apo35-general archive.
