		PRELIMINARY ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 4TH QUARTER 1997
			     E. TURNER 9/16/97

			NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***

	Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise
	(a small minority of cases), observing time has again been
	scheduled in half night blocks.

	Note that an unusually large number (7) of programs use non-block
	scheduling this quarter. See below for details. This affects, of
	course, the schedules of other programs with which they share nights.

	Scheduled engineering time for this quarter amounts to 6 nights.
	No contingent engineering time has been scheduled this quarter.
	Thus, scheduled engineering time will be at approximately the 7%
	level. Note, however, that one or more extended engineering
	shutdowns may be carried out in order to pursue tasks related to
	the Three Year Plan upgrade efforts. Such shutdowns will result
	in cancelation of scheduled science programs. Please see message
	#160 under apo35-general in the email exploder archives maintained
	on the Princeton web site for further information.

	In addition to such engineering time, science observations
	may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
	engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
	to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows
	"hot pursuit" of one of the high priority "teething troubles".

	The very high priority being accorded engineering work on the
	telescope is NOT permanent policy, but rather a temporary measure
	intended to accelerate improvement of telescope performance.

	IMPORTANT - OPEN TIME!:
	Seven nights in November and eight in December have some OPEN time
	available; this includes some prime dark and grey time during long
	winter nights. Requests for this time should reach me ASAP but no
	later than Oct. 31. Requests for this time *must* be passed through
	your institutional scheduler. First come, first served.

	-------

	EN01 = engineering time (Gillespie)
		no science observations scheduled

	-----
	JHU Note: 114% of nominal share scheduled.
	-----
	JH01 = 4Q97JHB Wyse G S
		As per template instructions, please do not ask me to calculate
		such things as lunar position relative to targets. Supply
		acceptable dates. Lunar position has *not* been checked on
		the assigned dates.
	JH02 = 4Q97JHD Ford D R
		One date, Dec. 26, of six assigned slightly outside indicated
		acceptable periods; please declare OPEN ASAP if it cannot be
		used.

	-----
	NMSU Note: 104% of nominal share scheduled. Only good luck allowed
	programs as tightly constrained as NM09 and NM10 to be scheduled with
	priorities as low as those assigned to them.
	-----
	NM01 = NM01 Walt D S
	NM02 = NM02 Hoop D S
	NM03 = NM03 Marl G S
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
                schedule below.
	NM04 = NM04 Rizz S S

                Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
                schedule below.
	NM11 = NM11 King D S
		Scheduling only approximately matches details of request due
		to low priority. Please declare any unusable time OPEN ASAP.
	NM12 = NM12 Ledl G S
		Object coordinates and request for specific halves of the
		night in Oct and Dec appear to be inconsistent (asking
		for Dec. 2nd halves for an object at 3h and low DEC). Time
		scheduled for Dec 1st halves. Let me know if this is not OK.
	NM13 = NM13 Maso D ?
		Please supply all requested information, in particular whether
		observing wil be remote or on-site, in this case.

	-----
	PU Note: 63% of nominal share scheduled. Undersubscribed B time.
	-----
	PU01 = 974PU01 Turn D S
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below.

		within the quarter not available at this priority.
	UC08 = 231 Turn (D on 12/3, G on 12/9-12) R
	UC09 = 236 York D/G R**
		Adler Planetarium twilight program (not accounted to UC).
		Use instrument mounted for the night's first program.
                Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
                schedule below.

	-----
	UW Note: 107% of nominal share scheduled. UW request over by two
	half nights, possibly due to not counting UW04 time? Please provide
	a summary/tally of requests broken down among B, G and R along with
	individual program info in future quarters.
	-----
	UW01 = UW01 Dier S R
	UW02 = UW02 Stub S/D R

		quarter and then request whole nights in late November.
		If any of the assigned time is not usable, please declare it
		OPEN ASAP.
	UW04 = UW04 Reis D R
		Rather confusing scheduling constraints. Hopefully the
		scheduled time will be useful. Please let me know if not.
                Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
                schedule below.
	UW05 = UW05 Rodg D S in Oct, D/G R in Nov.

		Please supply acceptable dates, not just object coordinates,
		as per template instructions.
	UW11 = UW11 Szko D R
	UW12 = UW12 Toma S R

		priority did not exactly match request. Please declare any
		unusable time OPEN ASAP.
	UW13 = UW13 Hodg D/S R

	MOST PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED IN HALF NIGHT BLOCKS. THE FIRST HALF OF
	EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM EVENING TWILIGHT (SEE CALENDAR DISTRIBUTED
	BY GRETCHEN) UNTIL 0050 MDT OR 2350 MST (SWITCH ON 10/25-26).

	FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND HALF THEN
	EXTENDS UNTIL MORNING TWILIGHT AND IS INDICATED BELOW AS "B".

	THIS QUARTER SEVEN DIFFERENT PROGRAMS USE NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING.
	THESE PROGRAMS ARE LISTED IN PARENTHESES () BELOW AND THE DETAILS
	OF THEIR SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS ARE LISTED HERE:
	NM03 = STARTS AT *SUNDOWN*, RUNS THROUGH FIRST HALF OF NIGHT.
	NM09 = 120 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	NM10 = STARTS AT *SUNDOWN*, RUNS 60 MIN PAST BEG OF ASTRO TWILIGHT.
	PU01 = 40 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UC09 = 90 MIN ENDING AT BEG OF ASTRO TWILIGHT.
	UW02 = 30 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UW04 = 60 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.

	INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE INDICATED
	IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO BY GRETCHEN AND WILL BE SHARED
	BETWEEN ADJOINING PROGRAMS AS USUAL.
