To the ARC Community:
I am pleased to announce that Bruce Gillespie has been appointed to the
newly created position of ARC Program Manager effective 1 June 2007. In
this capacity Bruce serves as the AS2 Program Manager in support of the
AS2 Director, Daniel Eisenstien. In addition, he will continue to provide
planning and strategic support on a part-time basis to the 3.5-meter
telescope and SDSS-II Directors, Suzanne Hawley and Richard Kron.
Bruce assumed his previous position, as APO Site Operations Manager, in
1993 and has played an active, usually pro-active, and central, frequently
critical, role in essentially all ARC activities at and concerning the
site in the intervening years. His accomplishments include oversight of
the completion and commissioning of the 3.5-m telescope and its
instruments plus the construction of the SDSS facilities, staff
recruitment and supervision, site and telescope operations, user support,
strategic planning for ARC, leading the Observatory through an amazingly
diverse set of crises and training at least one (the second) 3.5-meter
Director, to name just a few. The whole ARC community owes Bruce a large
debt of gratitude and will, I am confident, join me in wishing him equal
success in his new position.
Mark Klaene is taking over as APO Site Operations Manager and will
continue the tradition of excellent local leadership at APO. Bruce will
continue to be stationed at APO and will work with Mark to ensure a
smmooth management transition.
