A Gallery of Computational
Gas Dynamics
The images and animations in this gallery are selected primarily for
their visual interest. More details regarding the science can be found
by following the links given with each image.
All of the images and animations are from simulations using either the
ZEUS or CMHOG code on a variety of
supercomputers, including the Cray Y-MP, C-90, and T3E, the Thinking Machines
CM-2 and CM-5, and the SGI/Cray Origin 2000.
The images on this page are by now (9/2007) rather dated. For more
recent images and animations, see the
Athena Applications page.
Image of 3D MHD Turbulence in an Accretion Disk (0.13Mb)
The colors are the density on the faces of the computational volume,
the red vectors are the magnetic field through a horizontal slice plane.
For more details, see the
accretion disks research page.
Magnetic Pressure in Accretion Disk Turbulence (0.07Mb)
The left panel shows the density, the right panel is a volumetric rendering
of the magnetic pressure.
For more details, see the
accretion disks research page.
Propagation of a Pulsed Protostellar Jet
The colors show the logarithm of the density.
Click on the image to see a full-sized version at the end of the evolution
(0.25Mb), or download movies in
MPEG format (0.81Mb) or
animate gif format (10Mb).
For more details, see the
protostellar jets and outflows research page.
Convection in a Black Hole Accretion Disk
The image shows the logarithm of the density in the inner 10% of a
hydrodynamical accretion flow around a compact object such as a black hole.
Download movies in
MPEG format (1.3Mb) or
animate gif format (13Mb).
For more details, see the
accretion disks research page.
Structure of Driven Compressible MHD Turbulence
Left Image (0.36Mb): weakly
magnetized gas.
Right Image (0.35Mb): strongly
magnetized gas.
In each case, the colors are the logarithm of the density, the blue lines
are representative magnetic field lines, and the red isosurface is a
passive contaminant.
For more details, see the
MHD Turbulence in Molecular Clouds research page.
Decay of MHD Turbulence in a Self-gravitating Gas
The colors show the column density of decaying, supersonic, MHD
turbulence in a strongly magnetized gas, including self-gravity.
The simulation is fully 3D, and computed on a 256^3 mesh.
Download movies in
MPEG format (0.5Mb) or
animate gif format (6.1Mb).
For more details, see the
MHD Turbulence in Molecular Clouds research page.
Gas Flow in a Barred Galaxy
The image shows the gas density after steady state is reached
in a region 16Kpc across in a barred galaxy. To resolve the inner
regions of the flow, a cylindrical grid is used with 2pc resolution
at the inner boundary.
Click on the image to see a full-sized version at the end of the evolution
(0.15Mb),
or download movies in
MPEG format (1.3Mb) or
animate gif format (21Mb).
For more details, see the
barred galaxies research page.
