Hello all,
The meeting is now in less than two weeks. I sent around an agenda
a few weeks ago, with rather lengthy notes accompanying them. I think
it is worth emphasizing that as the Science Working Group, we have the
responsibility to define and flesh out the science drivers of the
LSST. Thus we should not take the parameters of the project as
handed to us, but can extend the scientific scope of the LSST as we
see fit. That means that presentations at our meeting should
emphasize what we *need* in order to carry out the science that we're
discussing:
   -Exposure times
   -Filters
   -Seeing
   -Cadence of observations
   -Necessary follow-up data
   -Accuracy of photometry and astrometry
      Etc., etc.

I therefore strongly urge any of you who would like to discuss any
possible subjects other than those on the agenda, or those which have
a name attached to them already, to plan to do so; just let me know.
Perhaps we can start some of this discussion using this e-mail
exploder; send e-mail to lsst-general@astro.princeton.edu. Dave Monet
has already expressed interest to me in pushing to make astrometric
science a principal science driver, and he will make the case at the
meeting. Dave, perhaps you can post something brief to this e-mail
exploder about this. In general, I would like us all to feel free to
start using this exploder to start discussion/debate on these various
issues.

			Many thanks, Michael

P.S. One thing I forgot to say in my previous e-mail describing the
exploder: I signed you all up for it; your user id is your account
name in your e-mail address (i.e., the part before the '@' sign).
Thus I am 'strauss', Daniel Eisenstein is 'eisenste', Dave Monet is
'dgm', and so forth.

P.P.S. Remember that you need to make hotel reservations by October
11 (i.e., this Friday) to get the less expensive rate at the Nassau
Inn. So please make the reservations soon! The phone number is
609-951-7500.
