Attention: Prof. Zeljko Ivezic, Chair of the Faculty Search Committee

The Astronomy Department of the University of Washington seeks to fill a
tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Astrophysics starting
in 2005, and no later than 2006. The Department wishes to strengthen
its strategic orientation toward survey astronomy, and seeks a leader
in any area of astrophysics whose scientific interests include the
mining and analysis of large data volumes.

The responsibilities of this position include developing a vigorous
program of original research, helping to provide scientific leadership
in survey astrophysics pursued by the department, mentoring of Ph.D.
students, and course design and teaching modern astronomy at the
undergraduate and graduate levels. At a minimum, applicants must have
a Ph.D. in Astronomy or a closely related field, postdoctoral research
experience involving astronomy or astrophysics, and a strong record of
original published research. The position is offered in the Astronomy
Department; however a shared appointment with another department at
U.W. can be considered after tenure is conferred. In exceptional
circumstances, appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor
level may be considered for candidates who have demonstrated a
commitment to mentoring underrepresented students in the sciences.

All faculty, postdocs, and graduate students have access to the Apache
Point Observatory's 3.5-m telescope (100 nights annually), the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey data, and powerful parallel computing facilities.
U.W. is a founding partner of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope that
will become operational in about 2012. Interdisciplinary research is
strongly encouraged with other departments and programs on campus,
including physics, statistics, computer science, earth and space
sciences, and astrobiology. See www.astro.washington.edu for details.

Please send a 2-page statement of professional qualifications,
interests, goals, and accomplishments; a curriculum vitae;
bibliography; and the names of three people who will send a letter of
reference directly to the Department. Priority will be given to
complete applications (with letters) received by February 15, 2005.
Documents will be accepted electronically in pdf format sent to
office@astro.washington.edu, with subject line "faculty application
(your name)".

The University of Washington is building a culturally diverse faculty
and strongly encourages applications from women and minority
candidates. The University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action
employer.
