Hello all,
As we discussed in the phonecon today, we wanted to include in the
SWG document a simple summary/comparison of various of the proposed missions
which address the LSST science goals. I've made a first stab at this, which
I would like you all to take a look at (and especially Tony, Nick, and Gary,
who are most familiar with the 8.4m LSST, Pan-STARRS, and SNAP, respectively).
Take a look at what is now the introductory chapter of the document, at
ftp://ftp.astro.princeton.edu/strauss/LSST/intro.(ps,pdf)
There are four programs compared: the three mentioned above, and the DEC (the
latter on Stubbs' suggestion). I pulled the relevant numbers from the various
web sites (and of course from the appendices of our document, in the case of
the 8.4m and PS). I would appreciate it if people could comment on:
-The words that lead up to the table (on page 4);
-The correctness of the numbers themselves;
-The appropriateness of the various quantities given, and whether others
should be listed as well;
-Whether other missions should be listed.
As I indicated, I am eager to get to closure on this, so *please* respond in the
next 24 hours.
In the meantime, I have essentially finished incorporating all your many other
comments on the document. I have to add a few more words at the end about
the work ahead on the comparison between LSST and other future missions, and
once I've gotten some feedback on the above table, I will declare us done.
Many thanks,
Michael
