http://casa.colorado.edu/~bally/ARC_IFS/ARC_IFS/ contains a downloadable "white paper" (in MSWord and pdf formats) by John Bally describing a possible wide field of view, integral field spectrograph for the APO 3.5m based on the potential availability of the CFH-12K CCD mosaic to act as its detector. The proposed instrument would give the telescope a powerful and unique observational capability/niche but would entail the most ambitious (expensive and complex) instrumentation project so far undertaken for the 3.5-meter. The Users Committee has already discussed this possible project and will discuss it again in future meetings, but as always and especially in view of the magnitude of the commitment that would be required to bring about the proposed instrument, broad input from as many members of the 3.5m community as possible is highly desirable. Therefore, please have a look at the "white paper" available at the above web site and give your comments, anything from technical suggestions to indications of your personal interest or disinterest in using such an instrument, to your institutional User Cmte representative. Please do not assume that "this will happen anyway at some point" if you do not take the trouble to express your views.
