Installation of the new red side optics on DIS has been completed, and the instrument has been returned to service. As those of you who used it during the last week know, there were some glitches in returning it to normal operation after the upgrade work. One problem remains in fact (see below), but the instrument is now considered ready for scheduled science runs. This stage of the DIS upgrade project, like the earlier ones, was led by Jeff Morgan, and many others at APO and UW contributed as well. The remaining problem is that the electronic noise on the red side has increased since the dewar was re-assembled. The cause of the added noise is being investigated, and an attempt to fix it will be scheduled as soon as possible. In the mean time it may create problems in obtaining spectra of the faintest sources (on the red side only, of course). DIS users should consult their OS for the latest information re this probelm.
