REVISED ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 1ST QUARTER 2003
E. TURNER 2/6/03
NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***
2/6/03 NOTE - One half OPEN night on 2/9 assigned to PU02, no
other changes.
2/5/03 NOTE - This revision corrects the January schedule to
reflect what really happen on a couple of dates and gives
changes affecting JH01.D, UC01, UC05, UC07, UC08, UW01 & UW05 in
February and March. Please notice the OPEN second half on
February 9 (ONLY 5 DAYS FROM NOW), which is mostly dark. Please
send requests for this OPEN time ASAP but via your institutional
schedulers.
1/18/03 NOTE - This completes the preliminary schedule for 1Q2003
by giving the schedule for February and March.
Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise
(a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled
in half night blocks. In fact, all currently scheduled science
programs for this quarter are in half night blocks.
Scheduled engineering time for this quarter consists of 3 nights
of routine maintenance (EN01) or 3.3% of the total available time.
SOMETHING NEW - In addition to EN01 time, small blocks (15-30 min,
most likely) of engineering time will be inserted into scheduled
science nights on an unscheduled basis to obtain S-H collimation
data on the telescope. The justification and details of this
engineerng project will be announced separately.
In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations
may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows
"hot pursuit" of some significant problem.
Two half nights of bright second half March time are available as DDT.
Please send requests for them to me asap. There is no OPEN time in
the current schedule.
Please see links off of the APO home page (http://www.apo.nmsu.edu/)
for a web based interactive version of this schedule.
-----
EN Note: No science observations scheduled during EN time.
-----
EN01 = EN01 Gill ? O
Routine periodic engineering and projects time.
-----
DD Note: Director's Discretionary Time (4.4% of total time)
-----
DD00 = 031DD00 TBA TBA TBA

-----
CU01 = CU01 Elli D O/R
Very confusing scheduling instructions!
CU02 = CU02 Ball E/S/G R
CU03 = CU03 Wilk E R
Observing schedule constraints misplaced in the proposal;
only scheduled at all because it is the holiday season!
CU04 = CU04 Schn D O (high)
Bright time assigned but much of the list of desirable
time is dark; assigned as well as I could manage at this
priority and with the confusing request.
Special filters for this program must arrive at APO for
mounting >1 week ahead of observations.
CU05 = CU05 Hear S/G R/O
Gray time assigned on an explicitly requested date even
though TAC assigned a dark half night.
CU06 = CU06 Mors E O
-----
JHU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.
-----
JH01.S = JH01 Zhen S/G R
JH01.D = JH01 Zhen D R (medium)
JH02 = JH02 Uomo D R (med, low)
JH03 = JH03 Will FP O
JH04 = JH04 Wyse D R (high)
JH05 = JH05 McCa D/G R (high)
One of the half nights assigned in March due to low
priority. Please declare OPEN ASAP if it is not usable.
JH06 = JH06 Glaz E O
TOO program, not scheduled.
-----
NMSU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.
-----
NM01 = NM01 Chan E O
Six 2-hour blocks corresponds to two, not three, half nights.
NM02 = NM02 Walt S/D O (medB+highR)
NM03 = NM03 Gold S/D R/O (medR)
NM04.D = NM04 Moor D R (medR+lowB)
NM04.S = NM04 Moor S R
NM05 = NM05 Nitt S O
Dark March 2nd halves not available at this priority; gray
time scheduled instead; please declare OPEN ASAP if not usable.
NM06 = NM06 Osbo D R (high)
NM07 = NM07 Bare G O
NM08 = NM08 Holt E R
Two of 3 half nights scheduled after March 14 despite
constraints due to low priority. Please declare OPEN
ASAP if they are not usable.
-----
PU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.

PU01.S = PU01 Pind S R
PU01.D = PU01 Pind D R (low)
PU02 = PU02 Stra D R (high)

PU04 = PU04 Trip S R
PU05 = PU05 Blak S R
PU06 = PU06 Stra S/G R
PU07 = PU07 Rich G R/O
Scheduled in March due to low priority.
-----
UC Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled. One less half night
scheduled for UC08 than assigned due to low priority, but one
extra contingency half night assigned to UC03.
-----
UC01 = 409 Lamb D/E R
TOO program, not scheduled.
UC02 = 408 York E R
UC03 = 410 Carl S O/R
UC04 = 413 Frie D O/R
UC05 = 411 Hobb E R
Requested Jan first halves not available at this priority;
please declare the scheduled time OPEN ASAP if it is not
usable.
UC06 = 407 York E/D/G/S R
Could not match Adler dates effectively due to the low
priority assigned this program, and more importantly, the
late arrival of the Adler request. Furthermore, the moon
phases assigned by the TAC did not match those requested
by Adler.
UC07 = 414 York D R (high)
UC08 = 412 Tuck D O (medB)
One of the assigned half nights not assigned due to low
priority and scheduling constraints.
UC09 = 415 York FP R
UC10 = 416 York S/G/D/E R
Adler Planetarium twilight program (not accounted to UC).
Use instrument mounted for the night's first program.
Requested Jan time not scheduled due to late arrival of
the request.

UW Note: 104% of nominal share scheduled. Two contingency half
nights assigned to UW01.

MOST PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED IN HALF NIGHT BLOCKS. THE FIRST HALF OF
EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM -12 DEGREE EVENING TWILIGHT UNTIL 0000 MST.
THE SECOND HALF FOLLOWS UNTIL -12 DEGREE MORNING TWILIGHT.
FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND, AS "B".
THIS QUARTER ONLY TWO PROGRAMS USE NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING.
THESE PROGRAMS ARE INDICATED IN PARENTHESES () ON THE SCHEDULE
AND THEIR TIME ALLOTMENTS ARE LISTED HERE:
NM01 = STARTS 120 MIN BEFORE -12 DEGREE MORNING TWILIGHT EACH
TIME SCHEDULED.
UC10 = 60 MIN BEFORE EVENING -12 DEGREE TWILIGHT EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE INDICATED
IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO AND WILL BE SHARED BETWEEN ADJOINING
PROGRAMS AS USUAL.
