REVISED ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 1ST QUARTER 2002

NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***
3/20/02 NOTE - Assignment of OPEN and DD time on 3/24-26 and
3/30-31, respectively, to JH01, NM01 and CU04. Note also
that the former UC07 time on 3/22-23 needs to be assigned to
another UC program ASAP.
2/17/02 NOTE - Changes affecting DD03, NM02, PU03 and programs
sharing half night with them plus the assignment of some OPEN
time to UC01. Note that there are now fragments of OPEN time
near the middle of the night in late March bright time available
for the asking. Scheduled uses of DIS during 2/26-3/10 when
it is expected to be out of service for a detector upgrade are
now flagged with a question mark in the instrument column.
2/7/02 NOTE - DD03 TOO program to observe M47 hypernova added
plus minor fixes to PU03 and UW11 listings.
2/1/02 NOTE - This revision records swaps involving PU03, UW01,
UW04, UW05, UW06, UW07, UW10 and UW11 plus allocation of one
previously OPEN half night.
1/4/02 NOTE - The only change is a swap between UC04 and PU04
in early January.
Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise
(a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled
in half night blocks.
Scheduled engineering time for this quarter consists of 6 nights
of routine maintenance (EN01) or 6.7% of the total available time.
In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations
may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows
"hot pursuit" of some significant problem.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Installation of upgraded detectors and electronics
on DIS is expected during 1Q2002. When this occurs DIS will have
to be taken out of service for approximately two weeks. An attempt
will be made to do this during a period that will minimize the
impact on scheduled programs (i.e., during bright time most probably),
but it is likely that at least some DIS programs will be affected.
DIS users are advised to be prepared with back-up programs and/or
plans for trades of observing time with colleagues etc.
DD01 is a set aside of 2 bright half nights of observing time
for rapid follow-up of targets identified by the SDSS or for other
quick response target-of-opportunity programs.

PLEASE NOTE that this quarter's schedule was unusually difficult to
construct because of a much heavier than usual dose of the customary
chasing-setting-objects syndrome, especially during bright time. As
a result, programs needing first halves in Jan and Feb, especially
bright first halve, often received less than ideal assignments if they
were not given very high priority by their TACs and were not scheduled
at all in some cases if their priority was low and/or they imposed
many additional scheduling constraints. The large number of observers
who excluded some early Jan dates due for non-observing related
reasons exacerbated the problem.
