		REVISED ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 2ND QUARTER 1999
			     E. TURNER 3/25/99

			NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***

		MODIFICATION OF SHUTDOWN SCHEDULE AND OPEN TIME
	In order to allow time critical, inter-observatory coordinated
	observations of Mars at opposition, the structure and duration
	of the scheduled tertiary rotation shutdown has been modified.
	Programs whose previous schedule has been changed are NM01,
	JH02 and UW01. In addition, this change has created 4 half
	nights of OPEN time. Please send requests for this OPEN time
	to me via your institutional scheduler ASAP.

			TWO MONITORING PROGRAMS SCHEDULED:
	UW01 and UW02, both SN monitoring programs, have been scheduled
	in this revised version. As a result, many programs have lost
	small bites of time compared to the last version of the schedule.
	There are a couple of other very small changes to individual
	programs.

	Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise
	(a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled
	in half night blocks.

	Scheduled engineering time for this quarter amounts to 17 nights.
	Of these, 14 are for a 2 week shutdown to implement auto-rotation
	of the tertiary and to carry out several other engineering tasks.
	No contingent engineering time has been scheduled this quarter.
	Thus, scheduled engineering time will be at approximately the 19%
	level.

	The 2 week shutdown was not yet planned at the time of the
	institutional allotments of time, thus total available time to
	schedule was less than allocated by the institutional TACS. This,
	of course, worked to the disadvantage of lower priority
	programs.

	In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations
	may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
	engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
	to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows
	"hot pursuit" of some significant problem.

	-----
	EN Note: No science observations scheduled during EN time.
	-----
	EN01 = EN01 Gill ? O
		Periodic engineering time
	EN02 = EN02 Gill ? O

		Time will be allocated to compensate programs pre-empted
		by GRB chases. Data available to all interested parties
		within ARC.
	DD02 = 992DD02 Chan AOTF O

	JH06 = 2Q99JH06 Ford D R (medium)
	JH07 = 1Q99JH07 McCa E O

	NM01 = NM01 Chan AOTF O
		See notes at beginning of schedule. Not scheduled exactly
		as requested due to EN02 shutdown.
	NM02 = NM02 Duri S ?
		Remote or on-site should be indicated under OBSERVING MODE.
		Not scheduled exactly as requested because there are never
		five consecutive G half nights.
	NM03 = NM03 Mill D O (medium)
	NM04 = NM04 Neuf E O
	NM05 = NM05 Leeb G R
	NM06 = NM06 Will D O (medium)
	NM07 = NM07 John E R
	NM08 = NM08 Gala S R
	NM09 = NM09 Hame S R
		Grey time scheduled because no dark time available subject to
		observing constraints at this priority.
	NM10 = NM10 Holt S R
		Ealy June first halves scheduled, closest available to request
		at this priority. Please declare OPEN ASAP if not usable.
	NM11 = NM11 Temp E R

		One half night of "supplemental time" scheduled in June
		D run despite indication of inconvenience in the SPECIAL
		REQUIREMENTS. Please declare OPEN ASAP if not usable.
	PU02 = PU02 Trem S R
		Reference to "evening half-nights" in request interpreted
		as preference for A block time. Right?
	PU03 = PU03 Turn S O
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below.
	PU04 = PU04 Turn D O (low)
	PU05 = PU05 Trip E O
		May run probably on-site, but June time may be remote?
	PU06 = PU06 Infa G O
		Only 3 first half nights of bright time in early June
		available at this priority. Please declare OPEN ASAP
		if not usable.

	-----
	UC Note: 95% of nominal share scheduled. TAC did not supply a
	unique priority ranking, so a somewhat arbitrary one was assumed.
	-----
	UC01 = 295 York D R (medium)
	UC02 = 293 York E R
	UC03 = 297 York E R
		Request lists both Echelle and DIS (high) for instrumentation
		with no indication of which is needed when, etc. Echelle
		has been scheduled on all assigned nights; please clarify
		or correct if needed.
	UC04 = 292 York E R
	UC05 = 287 Hobb E R
	UC06 = 298 Newb D R (low)
	UC07 = 291 Kron G R
		AAS conflict listed under OBSERVING SCHEDULE CONSTRAINTS
		should be under SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS.
	UC08 = 294 Kent D R (high)
	UC09 = 290 Dunc E/D R
		Not scheduled. Only early June time available at this
		priority, which appeared inconsistent with the slightly
		confusing OBSERVING SCHEDULE CONSTRAINTS. Also, assigned
		time cut so much from requested, that it was unclear how
		to interpret the OBSERVING SCHEDULE CONSTRAINTS.
	UC10 = 289 Frie D R (low)
	UC11 = 296 Kron S R
		Not scheduled. Requested time not available at this
		priority.
	UC12 = 288 York ? R
		Adler Planetarium twilight program (not accounted to UC).
		Use instrument mounted for the night's first program.
                Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
                schedule below. Three requested dates scheduled. One
		is scheduled for subsequent use of the Echelle (4/2 with
		UC02); is this usable?

	-----
	UW Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled. Please make sure that
	all critical fields (e.g., INSTRUMENT(S):) are filled out so that
	it is not necessary to search through the text looking for clues.
	-----
	UW01 = UW01 Dier G R
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below.
		One third of requested hours not scheduled because they
		were requested for dark time, but no dark time was allocated
		by the TAC.
	UW02 = UW02 Kris S O
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below.
		Arrangements for OS data acquisition should be
		made with APO staff well in advance.
	UW03 = UW03 Wyde S R
	UW04 = UW04 Marg D R (low)
	UW05 = UW05 Szko E R
		No instrument listed but Echelle assumed based on a
		comment in the OBSERVING SCHEDULE CONSTRAINTS.
		Could not be scheduled as a whole night because only
		grey time allocated (which does not occur in whole
		nights).
	UW06 = UW06 Gonz E R
		No instrument listed but Echelle assumed based on a
		comment in the SCIENCE JUSTIFICATION.
	UW07 = UW07 Szko G R

	MOST PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED IN HALF NIGHT BLOCKS. THE FIRST HALF OF
	EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM EVENING TWILIGHT (SEE CALENDAR DISTRIBUTED
	BY GRETCHEN) UNTIL 0010 MST DURING MST AND UNTIL 0110 DURING MDT.

	FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND HALF THEN
	EXTENDS UNTIL MORNING TWILIGHT AND IS INDICATED BELOW AS "B".

	THIS QUARTER FIVE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS USE NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING.
	THESE PROGRAMS ARE INDICATED IN PARENTHESES () ON THE SCHEDULE
	AND THEIR TIME ALLOTMENTS ARE LISTED HERE:
	DD02 = 60 MIN BEFORE AND 60 MIN AFTER TWILIGHT EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
	PU03 = 30 MIN EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
	UC12 = 90 MIN IN TWILIGHT EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
	UW01 = 60 MIN EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
	UW02 = 60 MIN EACH TIME SCHEDULED.

	INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE INDICATED
	IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO BY GRETCHEN AND WILL BE SHARED
	BETWEEN ADJOINING PROGRAMS AS USUAL.
