		PRELIMINARY ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 1ST QUARTER 1999
			     E. TURNER 12/17/98

			NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***

	Except in instances where strong science drivers dictate otherwise
	(a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled
	in half night blocks. However, this quarter does include an
	unusually large number of monitoring programs requiring one hour
	blocks of observing time. As a result, more nights are split into
	multiple pieces and have more than one instrument change, especially
	during bright and gray time.

	Scheduled engineering time for this quarter amounts to 31 half nights.
	No contingent engineering time has been scheduled this quarter.
	Thus, scheduled engineering time will be at approximately the 17%
	level. The large majority of this time (26 half nights) is for
	installation and commissioning of the new Echelle spectrograph.

	NOTE HOWEVER that engineering shutdowns may be declared with
	approximately 2 weeks advanced notice to allow work on automating
	tertiary rotation and/or installation of the new secondary. Such
	shutdowns are more likely to occur late in the quarter.

	In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations
	may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
	engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
	to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows
	significant progress on Three Year Plan improvement projects (see
	message #160 under apo35-general for details).

				IMPORTANT - OPEN TIME:
	There are only 3 half nights of OPEN time available in this
	schedule. However, all 3 are in very *early January* and are bright
	second halves. Requests for this time should reach me ASAP but no
	later than December 31. Requests for this time *must* be passed
	through your institutional scheduler.

	UW Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled. NONE of the scheduling

	UW01 = UW01 Szko D R (high)
	UW02 = UW02 Stub S O
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below. PU lens monitoring program is being
		temporarily suspended after 1/15, so it is not possible to
		jointly schedule. Also, time allocated (20h) is not
		sufficient for monitoring every 2-3 days through the quarter
		and includes no dark time. In addition, Echelle commissioning
		(without auto-rotation of tertiary) precludes monitoring on
		many dates. No preference stated for which part of the
		night. Thus, best attempt to schedule 20h for this program
		has been made. Please advise ASAP if it is not useable in
		this form. Arrangements for OS data acquisition should be
		made with APO staff well in advance.
	UW03 = UW03 Rodg G R
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below. Only 14 of 20 requested 1 hour monitoring
		blocks were scheduled due to Echelle commissioning (see UW02
		notes) and collision with UW02 time. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
		section discusses half night scheduling and instrumentation,
		but no half nights were allocated by TAC. Instrumentation
		needed for 1 hour blocks not clear, GRIM assumed.
	UW04 = UW04 Dier S R
		Eight half nights requested in ideal schedule but only five
		allocated.
	UW05 = UW05 Wyde S R
	UW06 = UW06 Toma S R
	UW07.S = UW07 Zuck S R
	UW07.D = UW07 Zuck D R (low, medium)
	UW07.G = UW07 Zuck G R
		If Feb. 18 time is too late to be useful, please declare OPEN
		ASAP.
	UW08 = UW08 Dier G R
		Not enough time (15h) allocated to meet requested scheduling
		frequency. No preference for part of night stated. Problems
		with Echelle commissioning (see UW02 note). Difficult to
		schedule a monitoring program at this priority. Best effort
		schedule implemented; please advise ASAP if not usefable.
	UW09 = UW09 Norm S R
	UW10 = UW10 Ande S R
	UW11 = UW11 Szko D R (high)
		Not scheduled as requested due to priority but scheduled
		time appears usable given info in the request. Please
		declare OPEN ASAP if it is not.
	UW12 = UW12 Dalc S R
		Not scheduled as requested due to priority but scheduled
		time appears usable given info in the request. Please
		declare OPEN ASAP if it is not.
	UW13 = UW13 Greb S OT
		Not scheduled as requested due to priority but scheduled
		time appears usable given info in the request. Please
		declare OPEN ASAP if it is not.
	UW14 = UW14 Magn D R (low, high)
		Not scheduled as requested due to priority but scheduled
		time appears usable given info in the request. Please
		declare OPEN ASAP if it is not.

	WSU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled. Neither of the scheduling
	requests were submitted on the current version of the template.

	UW02 = 60 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UW03 = 60 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UW08 = 60 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.

	INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE INDICATED
	IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO BY GRETCHEN AND WILL BE SHARED
	BETWEEN ADJOINING PROGRAMS AS USUAL.
