PRELIMINARY ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 2ND QUARTER 1998 E. TURNER 3/9/98 NOTES: ***PLEASE READ*** Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise (a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled in half night blocks. Scheduled engineering time for this quarter amounts to 6 nights. No contingent engineering time has been scheduled this quarter. Thus, scheduled engineering time will be at approximately the 7% level. Note, however, that one or more extended engineering shutdowns may be carried out in order to pursue tasks related to the Three Year Plan upgrade efforts. Such shutdowns will result in cancelation of scheduled science programs. Please see message #160 under apo35-general in the email exploder archives maintained on the Princeton web site for further information. In addition to such engineering time, science observations may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows "hot pursuit" of one of the high priority "teething troubles". D and G first halves in April and May were in extreme demand and were all taken before half of the total time was allocated. Thus a few mid-priority programs could not be scheduled. IMPORTANT - OPEN TIME!: Eighteen half nights of OPEN time, scattered throughout the quarter but starting as early as 5 April, are available; this breaks down as 11B/3G/4D. Requests for this time should reach me ASAP but no later than March 31. Requests for this time *must* be passed through your institutional scheduler. ----- EN01 = engineering time (Gillespie) no science observations scheduled ----- DD01 = Director's Discretionary Time GRB Afterglow Program (UW) ----- JHU Note: 115% of nominal share scheduled. ----- JH01 = 2Q98JH01 Heck S R JH02 = 2Q98JH02 Ford D R JH03 = 2Q98JH03 Conn G R JH04 = 2Q98JH04 Wyse S R April 2nd halves not available at this priority. JH05 = 2Q98JH05 Wyse G R Note that there is almost no B time in the second half of April. Program time constraints are thus very tight. ----- NMSU Note: 92% of nominal share scheduled. ----- NM01 = NM01 Harr D R NM02 = NM02 Hoop D S NM03 = NM03 Hame D S Need to specify DIS gratings. There is no first half D or G time in early May, and April first half D and G already taken at this priority. Thus, schedule request could not be exactly met. Please declare scheduled time OPEN asap if it is not usable. NM04 = NM04 Holt D S First choice time not available. Second choice scheduled. Please declare OPEN asap if it is not usable. UC05 = 258 Kron D R UC06 = 260 Coor D R Despite being a monitoring program which may have wanted time in less than half night blocks, this request gave zero detailed scheduling info/constraints. It is nearly impossible for me to guess how the program should be scheduled based on nothing more than an object name and a general science goal. Also, note that it is very difficult to schedule monitoring programs at low priority. Although it might have been better to leave this program unscheduled, I have assigned it time more-or-less arbitrarily when the target object is in the sky. If the assigned time is not usable, please declare it OPEN asap. UC07 = 262 Kibb GSFC_InB_Cam S** <----VISITOR INSTRUMENT UC08 = 256 Here G R UC09 = 257 Turn S R Requested time not available; not scheduled. UC10 = 252 York D/G R* Adler Planetarium twilight program (not accounted to UC). Use instrument mounted for the night's first program. Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before schedule below. Eight of nine requested dates scheduled. ----- UW Note: 88% of nominal share scheduled. UW request under by one half night? Please provide a summary/tally of requests broken down among B, G and R along with individual program info in future quarters, as per allotment instructions. ----- UW01 = UW01 Szko D R UW02 = UW02 Beck S R UW03 = UW03 Dier S R Dark time allocated but specified "ideal" schedule includes bright and gray time; scheduled as requested. UW04 = UW04 Skel D/S R UW05 = UW05 Ande S R UW06 = UW06 Zuck S/D R All scheduled time is dark, rather than half gray, as this worked better in the June schedule. UW07 = UW07 Wyde S R Requested time not available; not scheduled. UW08 = UW08 Bali D S It is not entirely clear whether the dates listed under schedule constraints are the only acceptable ones or the only unacceptable ones. I have assumed the former. Note that about half of the listed period is dark eventhough bright time was assigned. Thus, the scheduling constraint is very tight. THE FIRST HALF OF EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM EVENING TWILIGHT (SEE CALENDAR DISTRIBUTED BY GRETCHEN) UNTIL 0010 MST DURING MST AND UNTIL 0110 DURING MDT. FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND HALF THEN EXTENDS UNTIL MORNING TWILIGHT AND IS INDICATED BELOW AS "B". THIS QUARTER TWO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS USE NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING. THESE PROGRAMS ARE INDICATED IN PARENTHESES () ON THE SCHEDULE AND THEIR TIME ALLOTMENTS ARE LISTED HERE: PU01 = 40 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED. UC10 = 90 MIN IN TWILIGHT EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
