Hello, Because of a couple of messages that I have received from Micheal Strauss from the apo35-dis mailing list, I have had the thought that maybe we should have webpage (or something) with a list of helpful DIS hints. For example, the problem with saturated stars that Micheal mentioned in Message 70 of apo35-dis I and others have know about for years but was a new thing for Micheal. What I am suggesting is some document that totals up the ARC communities useful knowledge about the spectrograph so that new people who start using it don't have to make the same mistakes. Specifically, such a document would discuss 1) the charge transfer problems and the flaky electronics in the red camera (til they are fixed, of course) 2) possible problems people have had in wavelength calibrating data 3) aligning objects on the slit with both the slit viewer or through the instrument itself (what kinds of offsets one should use, what happens to the image when you move the instrument rotator 45 degrees, etc.) 4) overscan regions, suggested trim regions for image or spectroscopy, etc I know that everyone may have personal preferences, I am simply thinking of a list of do's and don'ts for a new user. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this idea? cheers Brad APO APO APO APO APO Apache Point Observatory 3.5m APO APO APO APO APO This is message 71 in the apo35-dis archive.
