Hello all,
I would just like to advertise the success that Xiaohui Fan and I
had last night, doing arcs remotely with DIS. We controlled the arc
lamps via the internet (http://lampswitch35m.apo.nmsu.edu/, logon as
visitor1 with the usual password), and didn't bother closing the dome
or mirror covers; we were still looking out on the sky. A 30 second
exposure in low-res mode with He Ne Ar gave us a fine arc exposure
with essentially no overhead. Of course, if your object is bright,
you will have superposed on this faint sky lines and the object
itself; you can avoid the latter by offsetting the telescope slightly
if it is a problem. You just have to be sure to turn off the arc
lamps when you're done.
Cheers, Michael
