Duration and Housing
The summer runs for a nominal 10 weeks, beginning early June through to the middle of August. The duration can be adjusted by student and advisor to be shorter or longer or accommodate summer travel. The big constraint is housing. On-campus housing is available for this time period. It becomes available after all the festivities associated with graduation and reunions are over and availability ends in middle August to allow the dorms to be readied for the upcoming semester. Students have to apply separately for summer housing through the housing department. The forms to do so become available around the beginning of April. Students will fill out the summer housing form, have the associated summer faculty adviser sign it, and submit it to housing.
Stipend and Hours
Summer students will receive support via stipends plus a housing subsidy. Hours are flexible, but of course you should be sure to have sufficient overlap with your adviser! Students can submit a maximum of 40 hours a week through the online payroll system. If students have not worked on campus before this, then they should register for employment status at Human Resources, New South building. The Astrophyscis department manager, Susan Dawson, will help with this. She also releases your time sheets to payroll. Stipend installments are paid every two weeks.
Resources
You’ll be working in one of the two undergraduate work areas in Peyton Hall, and will have access to a workstation as well as to the Department’s computer, library and database resources.
University Housing
University housing is available and must be applied for in the Spring semester. The deadline is generally around the second week of April. The housing availability begins a couple weeks after Spring semester classes and ends a couple weeks before Fall semester classes. Interim housing is available for Princeton students wishing to stay the entire summer.
Non-Princeton Students
Non-Princeton students can also get summer housing through the university. They need to apply in April along with Princeton students. The department needs to fill out part of the form confirming summer employment. And the student will either need a proxy to show up at the draw to pick a room or the university will pick a room for the student.
Non-University Housing
There are opportunities to sublet over the summer. Check out http://point.princeton.edu/tigertrade/ for leads.
