Abstract

If and when extrasolar planets pass in front of their stars, we are presented with a golden opportunity to learn about the nature of these objects. Transiting systems allow us to estimate the planet's radius and mass, and, by inference, its composition. Furthermore, the planetary atmosphere can be studied directly, both in absorption, and in reflected light. Indeed, the lure of transits has convinced more than 20 groups worldwide to follow its dark path... and who knows whether planets await us at the end?
