Peyton Hall Documentation

Welcome to the Peyton Hall Documentation pages. In here, we hope to have information to help you with life in and around Princeton, in Peyton Hall, as well as all of our computer documentation and FAQs. If you find anything that needs updating or adding, feel free to click the "log in" link in the upper right corner, use your Astro username and password and edit away!

General Information

Some of the pages in here aim to help you with adjusting to life at Princeton University and the department. Life In and Around Princeton provides advice on housing, daycare, transportation and local shopping areas, while Life in Peyton Hall and On Princeton's Campus has information about parking, library services, and specifics about the staff and people in Peyton Hall and other affiliated departments. Other Academic Information has some insight to related programs, such as the prison teaching program and the astrobiology club. All of the general pages should be in the general category so you should be able to find an index of them there, though others may be tangentially related and therefore not linked. The search box on the left side can always be used to find any text in the docs.

Local Computer Documentation

The initial reason for this system - and the systems that have preceded it - was to store information in a searchable and indexed fashion relating to the computer systems in Peyton. You can use the "Search" box to the left to type in a subject, or error message, and hopefully find the answer you're seeking. You can also browse around the site to learn new things. You might try the articles on Peyton Hall Network DOs and DON'Ts, Hardware, Software, Mac Info, General UNIX info, Printing or Email, or maybe browse the categories for Unix Commands or Cluster Computing. If you like, you can look at the list of categories, or even the list of all pages.

If you do not find a solution here (make sure to try the "Search" box to the left, too!), feel free to contact us and ask. Or, if you know a solution to something that's not listed, let us know as well and we'll consider adding it here - or you can add it yourself through the interface, just login with your Peyton user name & password. If you'd like to be able to login, and do not have an account in Peyton Hall, let us know and we'll consider adding you as a "local" contributor.

Outside Computer Documentation

While we do our best to help in any way we can, some problems necessitate looking to resources outside the department.

The Office of Information Technology

Generally speaking, OIT is where you need to turn if your problem relates to anything outside astro.princeton.edu, but within princeton.edu.

Helpdesk

If you're having problems with an @princeton.edu e-mail account or issues accessing a non-astro.princeton.edu server or website, have a look at https://princeton.service-now.com/snap?id=outages for any current known outages on OIT's servers. Failing that, the OIT Helpdesk can be reached by phone at 8-HELP (that's 8-4357) from on campus, or 609-258-4357 from off.

If you're really not sure, ask us and we can usually point you in the right direction.

Other On-Campus Computing Resources

For a number of reasons some resources are better shared between departments. OIT hosts a number of computing clusters available for use by members of the department. OIT's Research Computing website provides pointers to some of the high-performance computing resources on campus and information on how to get access to them.
