For those of us who write images in fits format:
Half way thru my obsering runs I have had the chilling experience
of being told that my images are saturated despite the fact that
the counts look all right on my computer.
The problem is that when reading fits images with iraf while
the image type is set to hhh, one needs to use strfits instead
of rfits. If one doesn't have strfits (which is part of the
STSDAS package) one should change the imtype to imh (iraf> set imtype=imh)
and then use rfits. But here one must be careful in changing the imtype in the
middle of the observations. Make sure the directory imdir has been
defined and actually exists (iraf>show imdir) and change back to
hhh (iraf> set imtype=imh).

Hope this helps,

Marianne
