REVISED ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 1ST QUARTER 2002 E. TURNER 1/4/02 NOTES: ***PLEASE READ*** 1/4/02 NOTE - The only change is a swap between UC04 and PU04 in early January. Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise (a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled in half night blocks. Scheduled engineering time for this quarter consists of 6 nights of routine maintenance (EN01) or 6.7% of the total available time. In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows "hot pursuit" of some significant problem. IMPORTANT NOTE: Installation of upgraded detectors and electronics on DIS is expected during 1Q2002. When this occurs DIS will have to be taken out of service for approximately two weeks. An attempt will be made to do this during a period that will minimize the impact on scheduled programs (i.e., during bright time most probably), but it is likely that at least some DIS programs will be affected. DIS users are advised to be prepared with back-up programs and/or plans for trades of observing time with colleagues etc. DD01 is a set aside of 2 bright half nights of observing time for rapid follow-up of targets identified by the SDSS or for other quick response target-of-opportunity programs. There are 5 half nights of OPEN bright time in the current schedule. Please send me requests *via* your institutional scheduler asap. These five half nights are in a single block near the end of March: 3/24B, 3/25AB and 3/26AB. Please see links off of the APO home page (http://www.apo.nmsu.edu/) for a web based interactive version of this schedule. PLEASE NOTE that this quarter's schedule was unusually difficult to construct because of a much heavier than usual dose of the customary chasing-setting-objects syndrome, especially during bright time. As a result, programs needing first halves in Jan and Feb, especially bright first halve, often received less than ideal assignments if they were not given very high priority by their TACs and were not scheduled at all in some cases if their priority was low and/or they imposed many additional scheduling constraints. The large number of observers who excluded some early Jan dates due for non-observing related reasons exacerbated the problem. ----- EN Note: No science observations scheduled during EN time. ----- EN01 = EN01 Gill ? Due to TAC assigned priority and extensive scheduling constraints, this program could not be scheduled. Note also that it requests what appear to be an impractical number of instrument changes during a single half night as well as requiring a grating change on DIS during the night (which is not normally allowed). Please consult APO staff concerning practicality of unusual requests of this sort, in advance of proposing.
