		REVISED ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 1ST QUARTER 2002
			    E. TURNER 1/4/02

			NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***

	1/4/02 NOTE - The only change is a swap between UC04 and PU04
	in early January.

	Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise
	(a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled
	in half night blocks.

	Scheduled engineering time for this quarter consists of 6 nights
	of routine maintenance (EN01) or 6.7% of the total available time.

	In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations
	may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
	engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
	to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows
	"hot pursuit" of some significant problem.

	IMPORTANT NOTE: Installation of upgraded detectors and electronics
	on DIS is expected during 1Q2002. When this occurs DIS will have
	to be taken out of service for approximately two weeks. An attempt
	will be made to do this during a period that will minimize the
	impact on scheduled programs (i.e., during bright time most probably),
	but it is likely that at least some DIS programs will be affected.
	DIS users are advised to be prepared with back-up programs and/or
	plans for trades of observing time with colleagues etc.

	DD01 is a set aside of 2 bright half nights of observing time
	for rapid follow-up of targets identified by the SDSS or for other
	quick response target-of-opportunity programs.

	There are 5 half nights of OPEN bright time in the current schedule.
	Please send me requests *via* your institutional scheduler asap.
	These five half nights are in a single block near the end of March:
	3/24B, 3/25AB and 3/26AB.

	Please see links off of the APO home page (http://www.apo.nmsu.edu/)
	for a web based interactive version of this schedule.

	PLEASE NOTE that this quarter's schedule was unusually difficult to
	construct because of a much heavier than usual dose of the customary
	chasing-setting-objects syndrome, especially during bright time. As
	a result, programs needing first halves in Jan and Feb, especially
	bright first halve, often received less than ideal assignments if they
	were not given very high priority by their TACs and were not scheduled
	at all in some cases if their priority was low and/or they imposed
	many additional scheduling constraints. The large number of observers
	who excluded some early Jan dates due for non-observing related
	reasons exacerbated the problem.

	-----
	EN Note: No science observations scheduled during EN time.
	-----
	EN01 = EN01 Gill ? O
		Routine periodic engineering and projects time.

	-----
	DD Note: Director's Discretionary Time (2.2% of total time)
	-----
	DD01 = 021DD01 TBD TBD TBD
	DD02 = 021DD02 Wood FabPer O

	-----
	CU Note: 90% of nominal share scheduled. Note that CU will be making
	remote observations for the first time this quarter and will need
	to establish and register the IP node address of a remote observing
	station.

	CU01 = CU01 Elli D R (low)
	CU02 = CU02 Stoc S R
	CU03 = CU03 Snow E O
	CU04 = CU04 Schn D/S O (all)
		Not scheduled. Due to TAC assigned priority and extensive
		scheduling constraints, this program could not be scheduled.
		Note also that it requests what appear to be an impractical
		number of instrument changes during a single half night as
		well as requiring a grating change on DIS during the night
		(which is not normally allowed). Please consult APO staff
		concerning practicality of unusual requests of this sort,
		in advance of proposing.
	CU05 = CU05 Rose G O

	-----
	JHU Note: 85% of nominal share scheduled.
	-----
	JH01.D = 01 Zhen D R (low)
	JH01.G = 01 Zhen G R
	JH02 = 02 Glaz E O
		This is a TOO program which may pre-empt other programs
		on VERY short notice (minutes) in order to obtain very
		early GRB afterglow observations; no time assigned in
		this schedule.
	JH03 = 03 Gron D R
	JH04 = 04 Colb S/D R
		Please specify which instruments are required on which
		assigned dates or if both are to be available, asap.
	JH05 = 05 Wyse G R
		Requested time not available at assigned priority; not
		scheduled.
	JH06 = 06 Ford E R
	JH07 = 07 Will FabPer O

	NM07 = NM07 Klei D O (medium)
	NM08 = NM08 Sned S O (medium)
		Not scheduled; not available at assigned priority.

	UC01 = 381 York E R
	UC02 = 385 York FabPer R/O
	UC03 = 384 Keet S O
	UC04 = 386 Wolf G R
		Two of the four assigned bright half nights could not be
		assigned as requested at this priority, and one had to be
		split into two smaller pieces.
	UC05.D = 389 Berk D R (low)
	UC05.S = 389 Berk S R
	UC06 = 388 Frie D R (low)

	UC09 = 383 York * R
		Adler Planetarium twilight program (not accounted to UC).
		Use instrument mounted for the night's first program.

	+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
	MOST PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED IN HALF NIGHT BLOCKS. THE FIRST HALF OF
	EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM -12 DEGREE EVENING TWILIGHT UNTIL 0010 MST.
	THE SECOND HALF FOLLOWS UNTIL -12 DEGREE MORNING TWILIGHT.

	FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND, AS "B".

	THIS QUARTER ONLY ONE PROGRAM USES NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING.
	THIS PROGRAM IS INDICATED IN PARENTHESES () ON THE SCHEDULE
	AND ITS TIME ALLOTMENT IS LISTED HERE:
	UC09 = 60 MIN BEFORE EVENING -12 DEGREE TWILIGHT EACH TIME SCHEDULED.

	INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE INDICATED
	IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO AND WILL BE SHARED BETWEEN ADJOINING
