PRELIMINARY ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 4TH QUARTER 2001 E. TURNER 9/22/01 NOTES: ***PLEASE READ*** Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise (a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled in half night blocks. Due to the late appearance of this prelim schedule and current air travel difficulties, no program that might require flying to reach APO for on-site observing has been scheduled before October 17. Hopefully, this will allow enough time for everyone to evaluate the situation and book flights as needed. DIS will be taken out of service during the period Oct. 25 through Nov. 7, inclusive, for a major refubishment and upgrade. No program requiring DIS has been scheduled during this interval, basically one bright run. Scheduled engineering time for this quarter includes 2 nights for on-sky recommissioning and calibration of DIS following its upgrade plus an additional 3 nights or routine monthly engineering time for a total of 5.4% of the available nights. In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows "hot pursuit" of some significant problem. DD01 is a set aside of 8 half nights (3D, 1G, 4B) of observing time for rapid follow-up of targets identified by the SDSS or for other quick response target-of-opportunity programs. There are 8 half nights of OPEN bright time in the current schedule. Please send me requests *via* your institutional scheduler asap. Two of the OPEN half nights are near the end of October, and the remainder are close to holidays in late December. Please see links off of the APO home page (http://www.apo.nmsu.edu/) for a web based interactive version of this schedule. ----- EN Note: No science observations scheduled during EN time. ----- EN01 = EN01 Gill ? O Routine periodic engineering and projects time. EN02 = EN02 Gill D O (all) On-sky recommissioning of DIS following upgrade. ----- DD Note: Director's Discretionary Time (4.3% of total time) ----- DD01 = 014DD01 TBD TBD TBD ----- CU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled. ----- CU01 = CU01 Stoc S O Presumbaly SPICAM is the "imager" desired; if this assumption is incorrect, please notify me of the correct instrument asap. Please specify specific instruments in future requests. CU02 = CU02 Elli D O (low) CU03 = CU03 Ball D/G/E/S O (low, high) The gray time awarded to this program had to be scheduled as bright, but not extremely bright, time due to the highly constrained schedule and its TAC assigned priority. PI should be in close contact with APO staff well in advance of the run re which instruments he wishes to have mounted, when switches will be made, etc. CU04 = CU04 Pryo D O (low, high) ----- JHU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled. Time allocations listed in the individual requests do not agree with those tabulated in the overall summary. The same problem occurred in the previous three quarters. JHU Scheduler - Please edit individual requests to match TAC allocations in the future; this will save me a lot of time and confusion. Also, please send the requests in the order of decreasing priority. ----- JH01 = 01 Semb D R/O (low) JH02 = 02 Kim D R (low) No time assigned to this program? JH06 = 06 Colb S/D R (medium) Please specifiy which instrument is desired on which night asap. JH07 = 07 Glaz E O This is a TOO program which may pre-empt other programs on VERY short notice (minutes) in order to obtain very early GRB afterglow observations; no time assigned in this schedule. ----- NMSU Note: Only 92% of nominal share requested; all scheduled. ----- NM01 = NM01 Chan G R/O NM02 = NM02 Walt D O (high, medium) NM03 = NM03 Vogt D/S R (high) Please inform APO staff which instruments should be mounted, when to switch etc. NM04 = NM04 McNa D R (high) NM05 = NM05 Harr S R Allocation may be confused with that for NM06; NMSU summary and info on individual programs are contradictory. (medium) NM08 = NM08 Klei S/D O (high) Please inform APO staff which instruments should be mounted, and info on individual programs are contradictory. Please name one PI per program; it is not important who it is, but it is useful for administrative and communication purposes. NM09 = NM09 Nitt D O (medium) ----- PU Note: 96% of nominal share scheduled. ----- PU01 = PU01 Pind D R (low) Instrument, grating etc not specified in request; scheduled based on previous quarters. THE FIRST HALF OF EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM -12 DEGREE EVENING TWILIGHT UNTIL 0100 MDT OR 0000 MST. THE SECOND HALF FOLLOWS UNTIL -12 DEGREE MORNING TWILIGHT. FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND, AS "B". THIS QUARTER ONLY TWO PROGRAMS USE NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING. THESE PROGRAMS ARE INDICATED IN PARENTHESES () ON THE SCHEDULE AND THEIR TIME ALLOTMENTS ARE LISTED HERE: PU05 = 45 MIN EACH TIME SCHEDULED. UC08 = 60 MIN BEFORE EVENING -12 DEGREE TWILIGHT EACH TIME SCHEDULED.
