		PRELIMINARY ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 3RD QUARTER 1998
			     E. TURNER 7/8/98

			NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***

	The preliminary schedule for July (mostly a maintenance shutdown)
	was issued on 16 June. The complete preliminary schedule for
	the quarter is given below.

	Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise
	(a minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled
	in half night blocks.

	Scheduled engineering time for this quarter amounts to 33 nights.
	No contingent engineering time has been scheduled this quarter.
	Thus, scheduled engineering time will be at approximately the 36%
	level. This large amount of engineering time includes a summer
	maintenance shutdown, a 3 night shutdown to work on automation
	of the tertiary rotation and regular monthly engineering nights.

	In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations
	may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
	engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
	to safeguard observatory personnel or facilities and that allows
	significant progress on Three Year Plan improvement projects (see
	message #160 under apo35-general for details).

	DIS grating selections are indicated in parentheses below.

				IMPORTANT - OPEN TIME:
	Several institutions undersubscribed bright time this quarter. Thus,
	fourteen full or nearly full half nights of bright time and two
	fragments of bright time plus one fragment of grey time are available.
	The majority of this time is in the early August bright run, both A
	and B blocks. Requests for this time should reach me ASAP but no
	later than July 31. Requests for this time *must* be passed through
	your institutional scheduler.

	UC05 = 266 York D R (low, medium)
		Preferred dates not available, same problem as UC04, so
		hopefully usable dates in August scheduled instead.

	UW Note: 89% of nominal share scheduled.
	Please provide a summary/tally of requests broken down

	UW01 = UW01 Skel S R
		Please contact APO techstaff well in advance concerning
		twilight use of telescope. This can often but not always
		be supported and should not be assumed.
	UW02 = UW02 Ande S R
		Please contact APO techstaff well in advance concerning
		twilight use of telescope. This can often but not always
		be supported and should not be assumed.
	UW03 = UW03 Zuck D&S R (low, medium)
		Please contact APO techstaff well in advance concerning
		twilight use of telescope. This can often but not always
		be supported and should not be assumed.
	UW04 = UW04 Szko D R (high)
		Requested full night of gray time is not possible because a
		<50% phase moon is *never* up in both halves of the night.
	UW05 = UW05 Wyde S R
		Please contact APO techstaff well in advance concerning
		twilight use of telescope. This can often but not always
		be supported and should not be assumed.
	UW06 = UW06 Toma S R
		Gaps in monitoring greatere than 10 days required by mixture
		of D and G time assigned to the program and other constraints.
		Monitoring programs are difficult to schedule at this priority.
		Best compromise scheduled...hope it is OK.
	UW07 = UW07 Wyde S R
	UW08 = UW08 Bohm G R
	UW09 = UW09 Krie D R (low, medium)
		Please contact APO techstaff well in advance concerning
		twilight use of telescope. This can often but not always
		be supported and should not be assumed.
	UW10 = UW10 Deut G R
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below. Priority too low for effective scheduling
		of a monitoring program. Best available time scheduled.
		Please contact APO techstaff well in advance concerning
		twilight use of telescope. This can often but not always
		be supported and should not be assumed.
	UW11 = UW11 Stub D&S R (gratings??)
		Not scheduled. Time available at this priority violates
		all of the preferences stated under special requirements.
		OPEN time in August available if it would be useful.
	UW12 = UW12 Bali D R (low, high)
		Not scheduled. Requested time not available at this
		priority. OPEN time in August available if it would be
		useful.

	MOST PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED IN HALF NIGHT BLOCKS. THE FIRST HALF OF
	EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM EVENING TWILIGHT (SEE CALENDAR DISTRIBUTED
	BY GRETCHEN) UNTIL 0110 MDT.

	FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND HALF THEN
	EXTENDS UNTIL MORNING TWILIGHT AND IS INDICATED BELOW AS "B".

	THIS QUARTER THREE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS USE NON-BLOCK SCHEDULING.
	THESE PROGRAMS ARE INDICATED IN PARENTHESES () ON THE SCHEDULE
	AND THEIR TIME ALLOTMENTS ARE LISTED HERE:
	JH01 = 120 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	PU01 = 50 MIN EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.
	UW10 = 90 MIN PLUS APPROXIMATELY 60 MIN OF ADJOINING TWILIGHT
	       EACH TIME IT IS SCHEDULED.

	INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE INDICATED
	IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO BY GRETCHEN AND WILL BE SHARED
	BETWEEN ADJOINING PROGRAMS AS USUAL.
