Due to its late appearance (for which I apologize, though it was due to
factors largely beyond my control) and the fact that the appearance of
the official schedule (in calendar format) is likely to be delayed further
due to Gretchen's summer leave/vacation, I am posting the preliminary
version of the 3Q1997 3.5m schedule to apo35-general to speed its
distribution.

Also, note that there is substantial OPEN time available in July which
has already been assigned to the various institutions. If you are
interested in using any of the OPEN time assigned to your institution,
please contact your scheduler ASAP.

		PRELIMINARY ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 3RD QUARTER 1997
			     E. TURNER 6/13/97

			NOTES: ***PLEASE READ***

	Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise
	(a small minority of cases), observing time has again been
	scheduled in half night blocks.

	Scheduled engineering time for this quarter amounts to 43 nights.
	No contingent engineering time has been scheduled this quarter.
	Thus, scheduled engineering time will be at approximately the 47%
	level.

	In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations
	may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent
	engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required
	to safeguard observatory personel or facilities and that allows
	"hot pursuit" of one of the high priority "teething troubles".

	The very high priority being accorded engineering work on the
	telescope is NOT permanent policy, but rather a temporary measure
	intended to accelerate improvement of telescope performance.

	IMPORTANT - OPEN TIME!:
	Sixteen half nights of OPEN time remained after the scheduling
	exercise for this quarter. They broke down as B/G/D=7/4/5 and
	were all during July. As per the proposal agreed to at the
	conclusion of 2Q scheduling of OPEN time, these 16 OPEN half
	nights have been assigned to the institutions on a random basis,
	based on the standard institutional shares. IT IS NOW THE
	RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH INSTITUTIONAL SCHEDULER/TAC TO ASSIGN
	THE ASSIGNED OPEN TIME AND TO INFORM BRUCE GILLESPIE, GRETCHEN
	VAN DOREN AND ME **AS SOON AS POSSIBLE**. Note that much of
	the OPEN time is in early July, starting in fact on the night
	of July 1!

	-------

	EN00 = engineering shutdown (Gillespie)
		no science observations scheduled
	EN01 = engineering time (Gillespie)
		no science observations scheduled

	-----
	JHU Note: 71% of nominal share scheduled.
	-----
	JH00 = OPEN time assigned to JHU (7/1-B and 7/18-B)
	JH01 = 3Q97JH01 Wyse G O
	JH02 = 3Q97JH02 Ford D R
		Not scheduled. Dark Sept. second halves were highest demand
		time this quarter (predictably) and were not available at
		this priority.

	-----
	NMSU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.
	-----
	NM00 = OPEN time assigned to NMSU (7/2-B, 7/10-A and 7/19-B)
	NM01 = NM01 Hame D O
	NM02 = NM02 Hoop D O
	NM03 = NM03 John D R
		Requested scheduling not available due to extended engineering
		shutdown and availability of only a single bright run
		in September. Best available alternative scheduled. If it
		is not usable as scheduled, please declare time OPEN and
		notify me ASAP.
	NM04 = NM04 Ledl D R
	NM05 = NM05 Harr G R
	NM06 = NM06 King D O
		It was possible to meet tight scheduling constraints
		despite low priority only by good fortune.
	NM07 = NM07 Ledl G O
		Scheduling constraints supplied for only 3 of 4 assigned
		half nights; remaining half night was scheduled arbitrarily
		but for convenience of on-site observing.

	-----
	PU Note: 80% of nominal share scheduled. Undersubscribed B time.
	-----
	PU00 = OPEN time assigned to PU (7/22-B and 7/26-A)
	PU01 = 973PU01 Turn D O
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below.
	PU02 = 973PU02 Fan D R
		Full nights not generally available at this priority.
		Half nights scheduled except in one case.

	-----
	UC Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.
	-----
	UC00 = OPEN time assigned to UC (7/9-A, 7/20-B and 7/25-B)
	UC01 = 220 York D R
	UC02 = 226 Kron G R
		Although B time assigned, almost all of the specified
		acceptable dates are G or D or during the engineering
		shutdown. Target fields are accessible during the B time
		scheduled, though it is outside the specified dates.
		If the scheduled time is not usable, please declare it
		OPEN and notify me ASAP. Please check a lunar calendar
		next time.
	UC03 = 225 Harp G R
	UC04 = 227* Kibb Vis Inst (InSb cam) O
		Note than special arrangements must be made well in advance
		for use of a visitor instrument at the site. For example,
		it may be necessary to make special arrangements to have
		liquid helium available.
	UC05 = 224 Here G R
	UC06 = 223 York D/G R
		Adler Planetarium twilight program (not accounted to UC).
		Some requested nights not scheduled due to engineering
		time or research program requirements for twilight time.
		Three sessions scheduled. Use instrument mounted for the
		night's first program.

	-----
	UW Note: 106% of nominal share scheduled. UW request over by two
	half nights, possibly due to not counting UW03 time? Please provide
	a summary/tally of requests broken down among B, G and R along with
	individual program info in future quarters.
	-----
	UW00 = OPEN time assigned to UW (7/3-B, 7/5-A, 7/11-A, 7/23-B & 7/24-B)
	UW01 = UW01 Szko D R
		Non-block scheduling. See note in BLOCK CAPS just before
		schedule below. Program could not be scheduled exactly as
		requested because all first half time after 9/22 is D but
		scheduled as close to request as possible. Two chances to
		get data in July scheduled due to reduced time available in
		September. Please note that, by long established convention,
		instrument change time is shared between adjoining programs;
		this can reduce time on the sky below the total time assigned
		by the TAC. I believe that such problems have been avoided
		in this quarter by scheduling UW01 adjacent to twilight, but
		in general, enough time to accommodate instrument changes
		should be requested (and charged againt the institutional
		allotment).
	UW02 = UW02 Stub G/D/S R/O
		Request specifies "B (moon below horizon)", which is
		contradictory of course. B time scheduled based on
		balancing UW request to add up to B/G/R allotments.
	UW03 = UW03 Stub G/D/S R
		Scheduled on *all* nights which satisfied the two criteria,
		but this yielded only 3 of the estimated 8 hours. Moreover,
		the scheduled time is quite clumped within the quarter.
		This technique may not prove satisfactory, though it is
		clever.
	UW04 = UW04 Beck S R
	UW05 = UW05 Skel S R
	UW06 = UW06 Skel G R
	UW07 = UW07 Rodg G R
	UW08 = UW08 Skel (D on 7/13 & 9/19, S on 7/16) R
	UW09 = UW09 Hodg D/S R
		Best available G time, Sept. first halves, assigned
		because requested second halves not available. Target
		should be available due to high DEC. Please inform
		APO which instrument is needed on which dates as far in
		advance as possible.
	UW10 = UW10 Magn G R
		Sept. time not available at this priority.
	UW11 = UW11 Hodg D/S R
		Please inform
		APO which instrument is needed on which dates as far in
	        advance as possible.
	UW12 = UW12 Toma S/D R
		Not scheduled. Request too highly constrained to schedule
		at this priority.
	UW13 = UW13 Mang G R
		Sept. time not available at this priority.

	-----
	WSU Note: 100% of nominal share scheduled.
	-----
	WS00 = OPEN time assigned to WSU (7/6-A)
	WS01 = WSU1 Seck S R
	WS02 = WSU2 Lutz S R

	+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
	MOST PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED IN HALF NIGHT BLOCKS. THE FIRST HALF OF
	EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM EVENING TWILIGHT (SEE CALENDAR DISTRIBUTED
	BY GRETCHEN) UNTIL 0110 MDT.

	FIRST HALF IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND HALF THEN
	EXTENDS UNTIL MORNING TWILIGHT AND IS INDICATED BELOW AS "B".

	THE MONITORING PROGRAM PU01 IS ASSIGNED 60 MIN AT EITHER THE
	BEGINNING OR END OF AN A OR B BLOCK AND IS INDICATED AS FOLLOWS:
	XXXX/PU01 MEANS IT IS ASSIGNED THE LAST 60 MIN OF THE BLOCK OF WHICH
	PROGRAM XXXX HAS THE REMAINDER; PU01/XXXX MEANS IT IS ASSIGNED
	THE FIRST 60 MIN OF THE BLOCK AND XXXX HAS THE REST.

	THE TIMES ASSIGNED TO THE MONITORING PROGRAM UW01 ARE INDICATED
	IN THE SAME WAY; IT IS ALSO ASSIGNED 60 MIN EACH TIME IT IS
	SCHEDULED.

	TIMES ASSIGNED TO THE MONITORING PROGRAM UW03 ARE ALWAYS IN THE
	0110-0140 SLOT AND THUS REDUCE THE LENGTH OF B BLOCK ON NIGHTS
	WHEN THEY ARE SCHEDULED.

	INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE INDICATED
	IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO BY GRETCHEN AND WILL BE SHARED
	BETWEEN ADJOINING PROGRAMS AS USUAL.

	PROGRAMS ASSIGNED TO "EVE TWI" SHOULD BEGIN 90 MIN BEFORE THE
	BEGINNING OF EVENING ASTRONOMICAL TWILIGHT AND END AT ITS START.
