We want to archive and analyze DIS calibration images to monitor
performance and create reference calibration files. These data
will be used to find both long-term and sudden performance changes
and can be used to predict the effects of our proposed improvements.
This database might also provide calibration files for your comparison
or use.

We need your help to do this. We're asking DIS observers to send
calibration files: bias frames, flat fields, and standard stars
in photometric conditions are wanted. In spectroscopic mode,
standards taken through a wide slit and their related discharge
lamps are needed. Any date, from the oldest to last night's are
useful.

We prefer a compressed (gzip or compress) tar file of a directory
filled with calibration files. An ascii "Notes" file with filter
information (what do the FILTER1 and FILTER2 mean?), and a table
of [filename, object] will also be needed (also include any comments
you think might be helpful).

Suppose 961225Hubble is the directory containing your files (961225
is December 25, 1996 and your name is Hubble). To make a tar file
of this directory, use the command

	tar cf 961225Hubble.tar ./961225Hubble

from the directory containing 961225Hubble. Then gzip or compress
961225Hubble.tar.

You can deliver the file to the machine named au.pha.jhu.edu (anon
ftp and cd to the incoming directory) or send email to au@jhu.edu
telling me where I can pick it up. (If you're reading this after
about May 1, 1997, check newer postings for an updated ftp drop
site. By then we should have a new disk drive and a student working
on the analysis.)

If doing the work above prevents you from sending data, you can pack
up an entire night's directory and send it; we'll sort out the
calibration files and discard the science observations. (But we'd
really prefer not to do this.)

Thanks!
