Due to the very late date at which the 1Q1997 schedule is appearing, I am posting it here as well as distributing it by normal channels through the institutional schedulers. Ed Turner ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ PRELIMINARY ARC 3.5M SCHEDULE FOR 1ST QUARTER 1997 E. TURNER 12/23/96 NOTES: ***PLEASE READ*** Except in cases where strong science drivers dictate otherwise (a small minority of cases), observing time has again been scheduled in half night blocks. Scheduled engineering time for this quarter amounts to 13 nights; this includes both the 10 nights announced in the allotment email plus a further 3 night extension of the December 1996 shutdown into January 1997. It includes one four night shutdown in late January for work on the new guider and primary support system. No contingent engineering time has been scheduled this quarter. Thus, scheduled engineering time will be at approximately the 14% level, compared to about 25% in 4Q1996 and 21% in 3Q1996. In addition to scheduled engineering time, science observations may be pre-empted, sometimes on short notice, for urgent engineering tasks. Such tasks include both work that is required to safeguard observatory personel or facilities and that allows "hot pursuit" of one of the high priority "teething troubles". The very high priority being accorded engineering work on the telescope is NOT permanent policy, but rather a temporary measure intended to accelerate improvement of telescope performance. There are 3 half nights of OPEN bright time available in March. Requests for this time should be sent to me ASAP. IMPORTANT NOTE: The tendancy to try to catch setting objects by requesting first half nights early in the quarter was stronger than ever this time, and many high priority programs requested large blocks of such time. As a result, all such time was allocated by scheduling of roughly the highest 50% of proposals (by priority). Thus, many lower ranked proposals could not be assigned the time they requested. In some cases, I have therefore not scheduled such programs; in other cases, I have scheduled time that is outside the indicated dates if it appeared possible to me that the time would still be of some use to the project. It depended on how much information was provided in the proposal. In some cases, it is likely that the scheduled time will not be usable; such time can be relinquished and declared OPEN. Please do this ASAP so that we can find the best use for the time. Also, restrictions on scheduling based on non-astronomical factors (attendance at meetings, ski trips, etc.) were also more common than normal in this quarter's requests. Note that I interpret these restrictions literally. For example, one project gave up the last two remaining half nights of dark time in the quarter because the observer indicated that he/she was unavailable before Jan. 16. If you intend such non-astronomical dates restrictions as only preferences, not binding constraints, it should be clearly so indicated in the request (under "Special Requirements"). ------- EN00 = engineering shutdown (Gillespie) no science observations scheduled EN01 = engineering time (Gillespie) no science observations scheduled ----- JHU Note: 131% of nominal share scheduled. ----- JH01 = 1QJH01 Wyse G R JH02 = 1QJH02 Chan D R JH03 = 1QJH03 Heck D R JH04 = 1QJH04 Oege D R JH05 = 1QJH05 Spaa D R ----- NMSU Note: 88% of nominal share scheduled. Note that the NM## program designations that appear on the schedule correspond to the priority ranked NM programs, not the internal NMSU program designations even though both have the same format. In other words, NM01 on the schedule is the highest ranked NMSU program which is called NM09 in the internal system. This is a very confusing nomenclature and might be better avoided in the future. Scheduler, please make sure your PIs are straight on which program is theirs! Undersubscribed B time ----- NM01 = NM09 Rizz D S The listed acceptable dates for this program appear to be far more tightly constrained than actually justified by the target coordiantes. Due to the program's high rank it was possible to meet these constraints, but please do not make the scheduling problem harder than it already is by making scheduling constraints tighter than necessary. NM02 = NM10 Wats G R Only 4 of the 7 allocated half nights were scheduled due to the extremely severe scheduling constraints. Most of the time in the dates listed as acceptable is dark and thus not available since bright time was allocated to the project. THE FIRST HALF OF EACH NIGHT EXTENDS FROM EVENING TWILIGHT (SEE CALENDAR DISTRIBUTED BY GRETCHEN) UNTIL 0010 MST AND IS INDICATED BELOW AS "A"; THE SECOND HALF THEN EXTENDS UNTIL MORNING TWILIGHT AND IS INDICATED BELOW AS "B". IF NO "A" AND "B" ARE INDICATED, THE LISTED PROGRAM HAS THE WHOLE NIGHT FROM TWILIGHT TO TWILIGHT. THE MONITORING PROGRAM PU01 IS ASSIGNED 45 MIN AT EITHER THE BEGINNING OR END OF AN A OR B BLOCK AND IS INDICATED AS FOLLOWS: XXXX/PU01 MEANS IT IS ASSIGNED THE LAST 45 MIN OF THE BLOCK OF WHICH PROGRAM XXXX HAS THE REMAINDER; PU01/XXXX MEANS IT IS ASSIGNED THE FIRST 45 MIN OF THE BLOCK AND XXXX HAS THE REST. INSTRUMENT CHANGE TIMES ARE NOT INCLUDED BELOW BUT WILL BE INDICATED IN THE SCHEDULE ISSUED FROM APO BY GRETCHEN AND WILL BE SHARED BETWEEN ADJOINING PROGRAMS AS USUAL. PROGRAMS ASSIGNED TO "EVE TWI" SHOULD BEGIN 90 MIN BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF EVENING ASTRONOMICAL TWILIGHT AND END AT ITS START. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1/1 EN00 1/2 EN00 1/3 EN00 1/4 A: NM03 B: JH05 1/5 A: JH02 B: UC10/PU01 1/6 A: JH02 B: UC10 1/7 A: JH02 B: UC10/PU01 1/8 A: UW02 B: UC12 1/9 A: UC09 B: UC12/PU01 1/10 A: UW02 B: UW10 Eve Twi: UC15** 1/11 A: UW09 B: NM05/PU01 1/12 A: UW09 B: NM04 1/13 A: UW09 B: NM04/PU01 1/14 A: UW09 B: NM04 1/15 A: EN01 B: JH04/PU01 1/16 A: UC02 B: UC08 1/17 A: UW01 B: UC08/PU01 1/18 A: UW01 B: UC06 1/19 A: UW01 B: UC06/PU01 1/20 A: UW01 B: UC06 1/21 EN00 1/22 EN00 1/23 EN00 1/24 EN00 1/25 A: NM02 B: UC08/PU01 1/26 A: NM02 B: NM08 1/27 A: NM02 B: PU01/NM08 1/28 A: NM02 B: UW09 1/29 A: NM06 B: PU01/UW09 1/30 A: NM06 B: EN01 1/31 A: UW06 B: PU01/NM07 Eve Twi: UC15** 2/1 A: UW06 B: PU03 Eve Twi: UW12** 2/2 A: UC09 B: PU01/PU03 2/3 PU03 2/4 A: UC04 B: PU01/UC04 2/5 UC03 2/6 A: PU02 B: PU01/PU02 2/7 PU02 Eve Twi: UC15** 2/8 A: PU02 B: PU01/PU02 2/9 A: UW05 B: UW03 2/10 A: UW05 B: PU01/NM01 2/11 A: UW05 B: NM01 2/12 A: UW05 B: PU01/NM01 2/13 A: EN01 B: NM05 2/14 A: UW01 B: PU01/JH04 2/15 A: UW01 B: JH04 2/16 A: UW01 B: PU01/NM09 2/17 A: UW01 B: NM09 2/18 A: JH01 B: PU01/UW11 2/19 A: EN01 B: UW11 2/20 A: EN01 B: PU01/UW11 2/21 EN01 Eve Twi: UC15** 2/22 A: JH01/PU01 B: UW11 2/23 A: JH01 B: UW11 2/24 EN01 2/25 A: UC02/PU01 B: UC13 2/26 A: WS02 B: UC13 2/27 A: WS02/PU01 B: EN01 2/28 A: UC10 B: JH04 Eve Twi: UC15** 3/1 A: NM10/PU01 B: UW07 3/2 A: UW10 B: UW07 3/3 A: JH03/PU01 B: UW06 3/4 A: JH03 B: UW06 3/5 A: UW04/PU01 B: UC01 Eve Twi: UW12** 3/6 A: UW04 B: UC01 Eve Twi: UW12** 3/7 A: WS01/PU01 B: UC01 3/8 A: WS01 B: UW03 3/9 A: WS01/PU01 B: UW03 3/10 A: WS01 B: UW03 3/11 A: WS01/PU01 B: UW03 3/12 A: WS01 B: UW03 3/13 A: UC10/PU01 B: UC01 3/14 A: EN01 B: UC01 Eve Twi: UC15** 3/15 A: UC07/PU01 B: JH04 3/16 A: UC07 B: JH04 3/17 A: UC07/PU01 B: UC05* 3/18 A: UW08 B: UC05* 3/19 A: UW08/PU01 B: UC05* 3/20 A: UW08 B: UC05* 3/21 A: UC11/PU01 B: UC11 Eve Twi: UC15** 3/22 UC11 3/23 A: OPEN/PU01 B: OPEN 3/24 A: WS02 B: OPEN 3/25 A: WS02/PU01 B: UC14 3/26 A: WS02 B: UC14 3/27 A: WS02/PU01 B: EN01 3/28 A: WS02 B: JH04 Eve Twi: UC15** 3/29 A: UW04/PU01 B: JH04 3/30 A: UW04 B: UW07 3/31 A: UW04/PU01 B: NM07 *These observations involve the use of visitor instruments.
