AST 541, Seminar
in Theoretical Astrophysics, "Greatest hits"
fall term 2004-2005
Organizers:
Scott
Tremaine tremaine at astro.princeton.edu
Bohdan Paczynski
Structure:
Each student is expected to present a 1-hour seminar on one or more of
the most-cited theory papers from the ADS database (refereed papers
only; no
textbooks; excluding physics papers that describe tools or
techniques used in astronomy; 600 or more citations).
Participants can choose any paper they are interested in, subject to
the following rules:
- paper cannot be on a subject you have already done
research in
- if there are two or more related papers on a
single subject then you should review both in a single
talk (e.g. Press & Schechter 1974 and Lacey &
Cole 1993)
- you can only reserve a paper when you book a date
for your talk
Talks:
- normally talks should use PowerPoint but
you should feel free to use some other medium if that
will work better
- talks should review not only the content of the
paper but developments since the paper was
published, and should describe why
the paper is highly cited
- talk should last for 45-50 minutes with 10-minute
question period at the end
